Police Officer Reportedly Arrested In Chikwawa Over Illegal Charcoal Transport

A police officer based at Blantyre Police Station, holding the rank of Sub-Inspector, has reportedly been arrested in Chikwawa after being found transporting 36 bags of charcoal in a Malawi Police Service vehicle.
According to a source at Nchalo Police Station who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident occurred on the night of June 4, 2026, at around 10:08 PM along the M1 Road near Kamuzu Bridge.
The source alleges that forestry officers stopped and searched a 15-tonne blue Mercedes-Benz truck, registration number MP 2615, belonging to the Malawi Police Service. During the inspection, officers reportedly discovered 36 bags of charcoal concealed in the vehicle.
The police officer allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation or documentation for the charcoal, leading to his arrest.
Sources further indicate that the truck has since been impounded and is being kept at the Lengwe National Park offices in Chikwawa together with the seized charcoal as investigations continue.
At the time of the incident, the officer was reportedly accompanied by a civilian woman.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
