Mkasa K!lled While Confronting Suspected Sugarcane Thief In Nkhata Bay

Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested a 38-year-old man, Jordan Mkandawire, in connection with the death of a security guard at Limphasa Sugar Estate.
Nkhata Bay Police deputy spokesperson Devoter Mithi identified the deceased as 54-year-old Yakobo Mkasa, a guard employed at Limphasa Sugar Estate in Kavukuka Village.
According to Mithi, the incident occurred on June 5, 2026, while Mkasa was on duty at the estate.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mkasa allegedly caught Mkandawire stealing sugarcane and attempted to stop him.
In response, the suspect reportedly attacked the guard with a sharp object, inflicting a severe wound to his leg.
Fellow workers rushed Mkasa to Nkhata Bay District Hospital for treatment, but he later died while receiving medical attention.
Medical personnel determined that Mkasa died from excessive bleeding caused by damage to a major blood vessel.
Mkandawire, who comes from Kama Mkandawire Village under Traditional Authority Mthwalo in Mzimba District, remains in police custody and is expected to appear before court to answer charges related to the incident.
