First batch of 150 Malawians displaced from South Africa’s Western Cape Province has arrived in the country under the government’s voluntary repatriation programme.

The group arrived on Tuesday as part of efforts by the Malawi Government to facilitate the safe return of citizens affected by recent unrest and attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

According to authorities, the repatriation exercise is intended to assist Malawians who voluntarily expressed a desire to return home following the disturbances.

Government has further assured the public that plans are underway to support additional Malawian nationals who wish to be repatriated from South Africa.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the safety and welfare of foreign nationals living in some South African communities.
