A 57-year-old man, Kazembe Banda, has been found dead in Nkholongo Dam at Kasese in the area of Senior Chief Chakhaza in Dowa District, three days after he went missing while fishing.
Mponela Police Station spokesperson Macpatson Msadala confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as a resident of Ng’anga Village under Senior Chief Kalumo in Ntchisi District.
According to Msadala, Banda left home alone on June 21, 2026, to go fishing at the dam but failed to return, prompting concern among fellow fishermen and family members.
“Fishermen launched a search and discovered his body floating in the dam on the morning of June 24 before reporting the matter to Bowe Police Unit,” said Msadala.
Police and medical personnel later visited the scene and conducted a postmortem examination.
The examination established that Banda died from suffocation secondary to drowning.
Police have since urged fishermen and members of the public to observe safety precautions when engaging in fishing activities, particularly when operating alone on large water bodies.
