TEACHERS IN LL TO HOLD DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST MEC OVER UNPAID ALLOWANCES

Teachers in Central Region especially Lilongwe will today hold a peaceful demonstration pressing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)to pay them their allowances for the services rendered during the May 20 tripartite election.

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) General Secretary Denis Kalekeni confirmed of the development in an interview.

In his speech, Kalekeni said the teachers across the country are dissatisfied with how MEC is dealing with the issue of allowances

“Honestly MEC has not been honest on the issue of allowances. Each time we ask them of the allowances they blame us of giving wrong bank accounts yet we use the same accounts to receive our monthly salary”, said Kalekeni.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the body is aware of the challenge being raised by teachers and he said soon teachers will receive their allowances.
