COURT ORDERS DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS TO RELEASE CALL LOGs OF DEATH THREATS ISSUED TO MPHWIYO

The High Court in Lilongwe has ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions to release recordings of mobile phone conversations( call logs) in which some people are said to have issued former budget director Paul Mphwiyo with death threats.

Judge Michael Mtambo issued the ruling this morning following an application by the defense in the case involving former justice minister Ralf Kasambara and others suspected of plotting to kill Mr. Mphwiyo on July 17, 2013 .

The judge said the call logs should be released within seven days along with statements police recorded from people who explained events of the day Mr. Mphwiyo was shot at his Area 43 residence.

The shooting of Mr. Mphwiyo sparked revelations that millions of kwacha had been stolen from state coffers in what is now called the Cashgate.
