Malawi visit rampant Algeria

Malawi will aim to end Algeria’s winning run in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when the two sides meet at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida on Wednesday night.

The Fennecs have a perfect record so far in Group B, having beaten Ethiopia and Mali before registering a 2-0 win over Malawi in Blantyre on Saturday.

Rafik Halliche and Djamel Mesbah were on target to help their side remain at the top of the group with six points, followed by Mali with six points, while Malawi and Ethiopia are the bottom two sides with three and zero points, respectively.

Saturday’s defeat was the second for Malawi, who have also lost 2-0 to Mali, with their three points coming from a 3-2 home win over Ethiopia.

Defender James Singala is concerned about the manner in which they conceded the two goals at home, something they will have to improve on if they are to get a positive result away from home.

“The game was okay. We didn’t have our top players in their usual good form. We could keep the ball, but we did not have more options in attack. We had chances, but we did not have clear-cut chances,” Singala said following Saturday’s encounter.

“We defended very well, but we were just let down by a few things. We allowed them to score from the half chances they created otherwise they did not create many chances. They just made use of the few chances they had.”

A victory for Algeria will assure them of a top-two finish and a spot in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with two games left to play, while Malawi will be looking to edge closer to the top two sides.
