C.I PUPILS HAVE TAKEN TO THE STREETS OVER GOVT’s DELAY IN PAYING TEACHERS SALARIES

Business came to a stand still in the commercial capital Blantyre this morning as pupils from C.I Primary School took to the street protesting for “not learning” as government delays paying teachers salaries.

The pupils who chanting anti-government songs, blocked the roads with stones as a sign of their grievances.

Teachers across the country have put down their tools as a way of forcing the government to pay them their arrears

FaceofMalawi speaking to one standard 3 student who opted for anonymity said; “ife sitinga ma pite ku skulu osamaka phunzirako chifwa choti ma phunzitsi sanalandile ma lipilo awo. Choncho akutiphela ufulu wathu ndiye ife tiku marcha.”

[We cannot be going to school and not learning, as our teachers have not yet received their salaries. Therefore they are violating our right and so we shall march.]

It has been noted in recent developments that some teachers across the country have not received their October salaries while 6,000 newly recruited teachers have gone over 6 months without pay.

Meanwhile resources gathered by FOM indicate that Primary school teachers in Blantyre are gathering at Blantyre Girls to march to District Education Manager to deliver petition over delayed salaries.
