MP’S DEMAND FOR MORE TIME IN PARLIAMENT

The legal affairs committee of parliament has revealed plans to make Wednesday a full day of deliberations.

This was disclosed after MP for Kasungu North East Elias Wakuda Kamanga asked speaker of parliament Richard Msowoya to increase the time MPs contribute to business of the house.

Chairperson of the legal affairs committee Peter Chakhwantha said one immediate plan to increase time for discussions is to change Wednesday from a half-day to a full day of deliberations.

Mr. Kamanga said not all the 193 MPs make contributions in the house due to time limitations. He cited the budget session as an example saying less than 100 MPs contribute to the debate before it is passed.

The speaker of parliament said he has referred the matter to the legal affairs committee to look into ways of maximizing the number of MPs that contribute to issues brought in the house.
Currently, parliament in Malawi meets on full working days only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The rest are half days.
