NO PLACE FOR BOGUS NGO’S IN MZIMBA

NGOs in Mzimba who are failing to deliver are at risk of being chased, Senior Chief Mtwalo of Mzimba sounded the warning.

Mtwalo said this Tuesday when Plan Malawi handed over Jalawe Community-based Childcare Centre at Kafukule in Mzimba West.
He said his area has many NGOs that are not physically on the ground.

The traditional leader also said such organisations were enriching themselves at the expense of intended beneficiaries.
“I am always surprised that when I move around in my area. There are a lot of [sign posts indicating the presence of] nongovernmental organisations.

However, I wonder how they improve the lives of my people. They get money from donors abroad, cheating them that they have projects in my area when in true sense there is nothing. They must go,” said Mtwalo.

He also faulted Mzimba District Council, accusing it of registering many NGOs without critically understanding their projects in the district.
In his remarks, Mzimba District Council Director of Administration Thom Munthali said they are planning to flush out all NGOs that are not working for the benefit of the people in the district.

He said the council was reviewing the projects by NGOs in the district and with the help from the chiefs’s comments, will soon make a decision.
“We know that some NGOs are just taking advantage of the land in Mzimba but this will end soon because we are going to trace them and kick them out if

we find them not working for the people. And not only that, we are also going to ask for legal action on such existing NGOs,” said Munthali.
Plan Malawi Country Director Lilly Omondi said her organisation is promoting children’s education in the country by providing infrastructure and learning materials.

She asked communities in the country to be committed by providing some local building materials for projects.
