GOVT HIKES TUITION FEES FOR DIPLOMA, DEGREE COURSES AT DOMASI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

The Malawi government through Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has hiked tuition fees for diploma and degree courses offered at Domasi College of Education (DCE) effective from 2015/16 Academic Year.

The development comes barely days after the government also introduces tuition fees for candidate pursuing a Primary Teacher Training course in the country’s TTCs.

In a statement made available to FaceofMalawi signed Secretary for Education, Science and Technology L.V. Magreta , Ministry says the tuition fees have been revised from K1, 500.00 per student per annum to K180, 000 and K220, 000 per student per annum, respectively.

According to the statement, the revision has been necessitated by the need to students to contribute to the cost of their raining which has been heavily subsidized over the years.

“The Ministry wishes to inform the general public that even the revised fees are still heavily subsidised because the fees are far still less than the real cost of providing teacher training at DCE which averages at K700, 000 per student per year. In light of this basic fundamental truth, the Ministry will undertake to review the fees annually to relate to the cost of providing teacher training courses at diploma and degree levels,” reads in part the statement.

The statement further says that with effect from 2015/16 Academic Year, there will no longer be Government Sponsored students selected to DCE.
“All selected students will therefore be on self- sponsored basis.

“Needy students will be eligible to apply for loans and grants under the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Fund which are being administered by the Higher Education students’ Loans and Grants Board,” she said
