HEAVY RAINS WREAK HAVOC IN NKHOTAKOTA: 13 PEOPLE INJURED

There was chaos in villages around Nkhota-kota Boma on Thursday night after heavy winds and rain destroyed over 221 buildings including houses, schools, churches and offices leaving hundreds of people homeless.

As the story was been complied, 13 people were reported injured and two were still admitted at district hospital.

While confirming the development, Acting District Assistant Disaster Risk Management Officer Enala Mataka said the wind has affected many villagers especially in Traditional Authorities Malenga Chanzi and Mphonde.

“Our preliminary assessment indicates that 221 houses including government structures like Nkhota-kota Police, Linga Primary School, Linga Community Day Secondary School and also Nkhota-kota Church of Presbyterian had their roofs’ and walls’ blown off and collapsed respectively” she said.

Head Teacher of Linga Community Day Secondary School, Donald Chikhungu said the wind and rain affected two blocks and office, in the same way damaging examination papers, “it is very disturbing because students will not access their end of term results.”

St Paul’s Primary School which has 2, 588 pupils had five classrooms affected and the school authorities are in dilemma on the use in the next week.

Phangwa, Chiwaula 1, and Tambala villages are so far the most affected.mana
