Woman hangs herself to death in Nkhata-Bay after her husband married second wife

A 24-year old woman has committed suicide by hanging herself in Nkhata-Bay after her husband took a second wife.

Nkhata-Bay Police spokesperson has confirmed of the development in a statement and identified the deceased as Mary Chiumia nee Banda.

According to the statement, deceased was married to Mr Kelvin Chiumia 27, who hails from Chibaka village in T/A Mankhambira in the district of Nkhatabay.

The statement says, recently the husband decided to take a second wife and this did not go well with Mary Chiumia.

“On 26th April 2016 at around 17:00hrs the deceased decided to hang herself in her house only to be caught red handed in the course by her husband.

“The husband rescued her and immediately took her to Nkhatabay District Hospital where she died later while receiving treatment,” reads the statement in part.

Postmortem conducted at Nkhata-Bay District Hospital revealed that death was due to strangulation.

The deceased hailed from Chibaka village in T/A Mankhambira in Nkhatabay district.
