Kaliati defends Mutharika over MEC appointments

Government through Ministry of Information has defended President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika over the appointment of new commissioners of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), saying he did not favour any Party.

Mutharika was accused of being bias in the appointment following revelations that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has contributing four representatives while United Democratic Front (UDF) contributing two.

The development raised fear among of Malawians with others accusing Mutharika of planning to rig the 2019 general election due to the fact that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and opposition People’s Party (PP) has contributed one representative each.

Reacting to the claims, Kaliati said Mutharika appointed MEC commissioners based on capabilities and not political parties.

Kaliati also attacked analysts quoted in the Nation Newspaper saying the sources are ignorant of some provisions in the country’s constitution in as far as appointment of commissioners is concerned.

Meanwhile debate continues over the appointment of MEC commissioners with many Malawians expressing concern.
