ESCOM workers denies planning to switch off electricity national wide

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) workers have trashed media reports that they will switch off electricity national wide as one way of forcing the government to hike their salaries by 35 percent.

Published reports in most of the local daily papers reported that ESCOM workers will from today Monday July 11, 2016 will implement a national wide blackout.

The development follows an announcement by Minister of Finance and Economic Development Goodall Gondwe that Civil Servants this year will not see a hike in salaries.

But speaking in an interview with the press, Escom Workers’ Union General Secretary Joseph Kamwendo trashed the reports.

“We have not declared any action as we are still discussing with our employers, and we will dully update the Nation on the out come of the discussions. We don’t know where these rmour mongers are sourcing their information,” said Kamwendo.

When approached for comment, ESCOM Public Relations Officer Kitty Chingota said the body will issue a statement on the matter.
Meanwhile discussions are underway on the matter.
