MEC vacates injunction obtained by Ex-Councilor for Bembeke Ward in Dedza

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has vacated an injunction which was obtained by the incumbent Councilor for Bembeke Ward in Dedza Davie Lingalawe restraining the commission to conduct by-elections for the ward.

Confirming the development, Dedza District Commissioner James Kanyangalazi told the press that MEC has lifted the injunction and the by-election will proceed as per MEC calendar.

Lingalawe was convicted of tampering with Escom prepaid meter at his house in Dedza so that he could not be paying electricity bills.

Meanwhile, stakeholders in the electoral process are calling for implementation of non-legislative electoral reforms to improve the conduct of future elections in the country.

The commission will be holding a couple of local government by elections and one parliamentary by-election in Mchinji West.
