Power blackout disrupt parliament deliberations

Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya was on Monday nearly forced to suspend proceedings in the house following an Electricity outage that hits the house.

The development attracted anger from Opposition MPs who criticized the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) of failing its duties.

Some of the MPs were also heard describing the blackout as one of the characteristics of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

The outage only lasted for three minutes and debate resumed.

Last week, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) lawmaker pleaded with President Mutharika to consult former President Dr. Joyce Banda’s administration.

The MP said during Banda’s reign the electricity challenge was not there.

Persistent power outages in the country has heavily affected smooth running of business with small scale business nearly losing its capital.

Despite the cries, Mutharika’s administration seems not doing enough to iron out the challenge.
