Heavy floods hit Karonga district in the north: Families rendered homeless

Heavy rains that fell on Tuesday the 6th of December 2016 , have resulted into floods in low lying district of Karonga.

The development came barely a day after the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) warned of heavy rains across the country.

Councilor for Lukulu Ward in Karonga Harry Mwanyembe confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

According to Mwanyembe, the stormy rains have destroyed a number of house in the areas of Paramount Chief Kyungu, T/As Kilupula and Mwakaboko.


He said it was too early to determine the extent of damage at the moment.

“The rain which was accompanied by storm has destroyed a number of houses from boma to Songwe including Karonga market is also affected,” said Mwanyembe.

He however warned people in low lying stretch to immediately move to high land to avoid loss of life.

The floods have also been reported in Rumphi, Mchinji, Mangochi, Machinga and Chikwawa in the Southern Region
