CHRR commends police in Mzuzu for arresting German racist

Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has commended the police in Mzuzu for arresting Hinteregger Jurgen, a German workshop manager at Strabag International, a German company that is constructing a 47 kilometres Mzuzu-Nkhata bay road for racial abuse.

Jurgen was arrested on Saturday after calling one of his workers at the Company who is a Malawian a ‘monkey’.

The whole drama started when one of Strabag’s drivers, Charles Devina, drove a water tanker on some metal bars and got the vehicle’s tyre to burst.

“While reversing within the camp near the place where the tanker fills water, one of the vehicle’s tyres got scratched by some metal bars. This did not go down well with Jurgen who shouted and called me a monkey and snatched vehicle keys from me,” Deniva said.

The matter was later referred to Nkhata-bay police after a strike by workers hence his arrest.

In a statement made available to faceofmalawi, CHRR commended the police for the timely response.

“By calling a Malawian worker “Monkey” Jurgen has demonstrated a gross violation of human rights. Jurgen deserves to be deported, upon answering relevant charges. This Warm Heart of Africa is too good to accommodate such violators of human rights,” reads in part the statement.

Meanwhile Juegn has been moved to songwe boarder in Karonga ready for deportation.
