Police has denied the rumour of arresting younger sister and personal assistant to Malawi’s former President Joyce Banda, Cecilia Kumpukwe over Vice President Saulos Chilima’s fake resignation letter.
Kumpukwe was picked earlier on Tuesday at her residence in Chigumula, Blantyre before being taken to Area 30 in the Lilongwe.
The development came recently after another suspect, Stella Hassan allegedly arrested over the same issue.
Hassan is a memeber of the People’s Party and vocal critic of the Mutharika led administration.
Two weeks ago, a resignation letter purportedly from Chilima, went viral on social media, before it was disowned by the vice president’s aides.
When contacted however, the police feigned ignorance on the matter.
Thomeck Nyaude who is Deputy National Police Spokesperson told this reporter that they are still investigating and denied the rumours that have been circulating.
He added that the case is sensitive and the public will be informed once they’ve made a breakthrough in their investigations.
This however has not gone down well with commentators who are branding the law enforcers as secretive because this not the first time that they have chosen to hide the truth from the public.
However, Andekuche Chamthunya, spokesperson of the former Malawi leader confirmed the arrest to reporters.
According to Chamthunya, they are not aware of where Kumpukwe is being held.
He described the act as a growing trend that the current administration to intimidate loyalists of opposition parties.
Government spokesperson Nicholas Dausi denied having a hand in the arrest of the two women.
“If someone has committed a crime, then he or she should be arrested even if they are related to a politician,” Dausi arguably answered.
Meanwhile several social activists are accusing police for arresting the suspects in Blantyre but take them to Lilongwe for interrogation.
