Police officer in Hospital after being attacked by primary school learners in Lunzu

A police officer stationed at Chileka police unit is battling for his life after being attacked by primary school learners at Lunzu in the commercial capital Blantyre.

Pupils from Nansengwe and Lunzu primary schools mobilized themselves to protest against continued strike by teachers over unpaid leave grants and other outstanding grievances.

The leaners blocked the road with burning tyres and big stones.

The pupils were chanting “we also want to drive vehicles one day, so no vehicle will pass here until our teachers’ strike is called off and we are back to class”.

After hearing the news, police officers from Chileka headed its Officer in Charge rushed to the scene to calm down the situation.

The pupils overpowered the Officer in Charge and assaulted him while other officers escaped in fear of the angry learners.

The Axa Coach from Lilongwe to Blantyre avoided the M1 road by taking route to Chileka.

Meanwhile Members of Parliament have threatened to join the protest.
