Popular Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has been released on bail after being detained for questioning by Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with the purchase of his luxury vehicle, a yellow 2019 Lamborghini Urus.

The musician was granted bail after paying a substantial sum of $454,000. His arrest was part of an ongoing investigation into the vehicle’s origins, which has international connections.

The probe was triggered after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified the Lamborghini as an asset linked to the criminal activities of Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian national currently serving a seven-year prison term in the United States.

Shatta Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., has publicly denied any knowledge of or connection to Nana Kwabena Amuah.

The arrest coincides with a major crackdown on cybercrime. Earlier this month, the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department extradited and arrested three other Ghanaian nationals alleged to be the masterminds behind a massive $100 million fraud scheme. The scheme reportedly involved sophisticated romance scams and phishing attacks targeting victims in the United States.

The investigation, a collaboration between Ghanaian and U.S. authorities, is ongoing.

The luxury ride, reportedly worth $150,000 (£110,000), was seized earlier this month at the request of US authorities, who claim it’s connected to a fraud scheme involving another Ghanaian, Nana Kwabena Amuah, now serving seven years in a US jail.

Wale’s camp, however, insists the issue has nothing to do with fraud, saying the “Already” hitmaker is only facing questions about tax obligations. In a statement, his team revealed that the artist voluntarily presented himself to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (Eoco) on Wednesday.

Fans have been left buzzing on social media since news broke, with many expressing shock that one of Ghana’s biggest stars could be entangled in an international scandal.

The dancehall king, born Charles Nii Armah, has denied knowing Amuah or being involved in the scheme. He maintains he was only a “third-party owner” of the Lamborghini and doesn’t even know who shipped it into Ghana.

Still, the sleek car is set to be shipped back to the US to help compensate victims of Amuah’s alleged $100 million global fraud network, which involved romance scams, phishing attacks, and fake vendors.

Wale’s management has urged fans to stay calm: “His legal team is fully engaged and actively working with the authorities to resolve this matter,” they said in a social media post.

This isn’t the first time the outspoken star has grabbed headlines, but with a Beyoncé collaboration under his belt and a massive following across Africa, many are watching closely to see how this latest chapter in the Shatta Wale saga unfolds.

Ghanaian police have successfully rescued 76 young Ghanaians who were trafficked to Nigeria under the guise of football contracts and lucrative job opportunities abroad.

According to police reports, the victims were lured by a well-organized human trafficking syndicate promising them sports careers and employment in foreign countries. However, upon arrival in Nigeria, the victims’ travel documents and mobile phones were confiscated. They were then forced to live in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions while facing threats and psychological abuse.

Authorities revealed that the traffickers demanded that each victim extort at least $1,000 (approximately K1.7 million Malawi Kwacha) from their families back home, using manipulation and pressure tactics. In some cases, the traffickers used the victims’ phones to call their relatives and friends, fabricating stories to scam them into sending money.

Seven Ghanaian nationals have been arrested in connection with the trafficking operation. The rescue mission was carried out between May and June this year, with the help of Interpol and Nigerian security agencies.

Police further disclosed that the victims are currently still in Nigeria, awaiting repatriation back to Ghana. Many of them are said to be suffering from severe psychological trauma and financial distress as a result of the ordeal.

Investigations have linked the scam to QNET, a company previously banned in Ghana in 2022 over multiple fraud and scam allegations. However, QNET continues to deny any involvement in the trafficking case, insisting it operates legitimately.

Authorities in Ghana have since issued a renewed warning to the public about fake overseas job and recruitment offers, urging citizens to verify opportunities before committing.

Ghana has temporarily shut down its embassy in Washington DC to carry out a “system overhaul” following serious corruption allegations involving its staff.

The country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the decision in a Facebook post, stating that the move comes in the wake of a special audit that uncovered a scheme by members of the embassy’s IT department to extort extra fees from visa and passport applicants.

In response, the Ghanaian government has recalled all foreign affairs staff posted to the embassy, dissolved its IT department, and suspended all locally recruited employees. Authorities are also preparing to prosecute individuals implicated in the illegal operation.

The minister assured Ghanaians that these actions are part of broader efforts to uphold integrity and restore trust in the country’s foreign service. The embassy will remain closed until further notice as investigations and system reforms continue.

A U.S. court has significantly reduced a defamation award granted to renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, cutting the payout from $18 million to just $500.

The original award was issued in March 2024 by a jury that found former Ghanaian Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong guilty of defaming Anas. Agyapong had publicly called Anas a “criminal” and falsely linked him to the 2019 murder of fellow investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. The defamatory remarks were made during a podcast recorded in the United States.

However, in a recent ruling, a New Jersey judge described the $18 million sum as “excessive and legally unsustainable,” siding with an appeal by Agyapong’s legal team. The judge ultimately reduced the damages to a symbolic $500, despite the jury’s original decision in Anas’ favor.

Anas has since stated his intention to appeal the reduction. His investigative outfit, Tiger Eye P.I., emphasized that the lawsuit was never about financial gain but about protecting his reputation and the integrity of investigative journalism.

Before approaching the U.S. courts, Anas had filed a similar defamation suit in Ghana. That case was dismissed, with the presiding judge controversially describing Anas’ undercover reporting style as “investigative terrorism.”

The U.S. case proceeded independently due to the fact that Agyapong made the defamatory remarks while in the U.S. and owns property in the country  establishing jurisdiction for the American court.

Anas, widely recognized for his undercover work and trademark face mask to protect his identity, has led numerous high-profile investigations into corruption across Africa. After the initial jury verdict in March, he hailed the outcome as a form of justice and a sign of encouragement to fellow journalists across the continent.

In contrast, Kennedy Agyapong, who is known for his fiery rhetoric, responded to the case by stating he remains committed to promoting “truth and accountability in public life.”

The case continues to generate public debate in both Ghana and abroad, especially concerning press freedom, journalistic methods, and the boundaries of political speech.

Fighting between peacekeeping troops and personnel of the Ghana Prison Service in Bawku in the Upper East Region has left scores of officers injured.

The fight between the officers of the two security agencies, broke out at the Bawku Naba Palace where an inaugural ceremony was held to kick start his 40th anniversary on the Skin.

Police have said that an earlier grudge over a missing phone caused the Wednesday, April 24 feud.

The source said some soldiers who had been detailed to provide security during the ceremony, confronted and beat to pulp, one prisoner office who was also on duty at the palace, over the missing phone. The injured prison officer was rushed to the hospital for treatment

The source said following the attack on their colleague, prison officers from the Bawku Central Prisons rushed to the Palace where they massed with guns against the soldiers on duty.

They allegedly fired gunshots to disarm the soldiers and mercilessly beat them up. The injured soldiers were also rushed to the Vineyard Hospital in Bawku for treatment.

The police have managed to bring the situation under control.

The police have not commented on the incident yet. But it has been gathered that leadership of the two security agencies have taken steps to amicably resolve the matter.

GHANA -The police have arrested two ‘weed smokers’ for allegedly raping the dead body of a 36-year-old woman in Sene Bokankye, Ashanti Region, during a stealing expedition on February 8, 2024.

The deceased was asleep in her uncompleted house when the perpetrators entered and fatally smashed her head twice with a cement block.

Upon realizing she was dead, they took turns sexually assaulting her, in addition to stealing her mobile phone and GHC42.00 in cash.

Investigators have collected swaps from the deceased’s vagina to conduct a DNA test.

A Ghanaian court has sentenced 12 people to life imprisonment for the murder of army officer Major Maxwell Mahama seven years ago.

The High Court in Accra found them guilty of murder, conspiracy, and abetment in the lynching that took place in Denkyira Obuasi in May 2017.

Among the convicted is a local politician accused of inciting the community to attack the soldier while he was jogging. Two suspects were acquitted.

Major Mahama, 32, was attacked by a mob over false allegations of being an armed robber while on duty to protect a local mine.

The incident sparked national outrage, leading to the arrest of over 50 suspects, with 14 facing prosecution.

The government posthumously promoted Major Mahama to the rank of major and gave him a state burial in Accra.

In 2019, a statue was unveiled in Accra as a national campaign against mob action.

Ghanaian Member of Parliament, Isaac Adongo, on Tuesday, apologised to Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, for comparing him with the country’s vice-president, Mahamudu Bawumia, describing them as poor performers, BBC Africa reports Wednesday.

Adongo had, in 2022, criticized the VP for the country’s poor economic performance.

He likened the VP to what he described as Maguire’s poor performance as a player who scores own goals.

However, on Tuesday, during a budget debate in the parliament house, Adongo said Maguire had now become a “transformational footballer,” while adding that the VP now “roams at the IMF with a cup in hand.”

Adongo said, “Mr. Speaker, I now apologise to Harry Maguire. Today, Harry Maguire has turned the corner and he is a transformational footballer.

“[Harry Maguire] is now a key player for Manchester but as for our Maguire [Mr Bawumia] he is now roaming at the IMF with a cup in hand,” the MP added.

He criticised Bawumia’s performance as vice-president and head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team, which he said had driven the country more into debt and risked its economic performance.

A fake Ghanaian pastor, Kelvin Abeka, has been arrested for pretending to be a junior pastor of Prophet Ogyaba.

Abeka was exposed after instilling fear in a pregnant woman and forcing her to bathe her genitalia with salt water.

The incident came to light after Prophet Ogyaba, the founder and head of the Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry, questioned Abeka in his office.

In a video posted by Oman Channel, Abeka confessed to impersonating his junior pastor to win the trust of unsuspecting individuals.

The heavily pregnant woman who was the victim of Abeka’s actions was also present in the office. Abeka tried to justify his actions, claiming he was acting at God’s command.
