President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered Nigerian security agencies to immediately stop the wave of violent attacks plaguing Benue State, where more than 200 people have been killed in just a few days.

The President condemned the killings as “inhuman and anti-progress” following protests in Makurdi, the state capital, where residents demanded action to protect communities under attack.

The violence linked to a long-running conflict between herders and farmers continues to escalate. Data from Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited shows over 1,000 deaths recorded in the state between May 2023 and May 2025 alone.

Most recently, a massacre in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, on the night of 13th/14th June, claimed the lives of around 200 people, many of whom were internally displaced persons being sheltered at a local Catholic mission.

On Sunday, Pope Leo offered a heartfelt prayer for the victims, calling it a “terrible massacre.” During the Angelus in Rome, the pontiff said he was thinking especially of the “rural Christian communities of Benue State who have been relentless victims of violence.” He prayed for “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International Nigeria issued a strong statement, calling on the government to “immediately end the almost daily bloodshed” and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The Benue crisis stems largely from land disputes and resource pressure between Fulani herders, who are mostly Muslim, and the Christian farming communities of the Middle Belt. Climate change, desertification, and shrinking arable land are pushing herders southward, intensifying these clashes.

Baba Othman Ngelzarma, a Fulani community leader, denied his people’s involvement in the recent killings, stating: “Our people are not behind the Benue killings.”

Despite previous security efforts, including federal joint task forces and the recent establishment of Forest Guards, analysts say the situation demands both military strategy and economic policy.

Security analyst Kabir Adamu recommended the deployment of intelligence-based special forces and the creation of equitable grazing zones to reduce tensions.

Public affairs commentator Sam Philip criticized the government for focusing on Boko Haram and kidnappings in other regions, saying the Benue conflict has been “ignored for too long.”

As Nigeria’s leadership faces renewed pressure from both global voices and citizens, many in Benue are still left wondering when lasting peace will finally come.

The incident occurred around 8:30 PM in a residential building in Lekki Phase 1. Neighbors reported hearing a loud crash before discovering the tank had completely crushed Cynthia’s bed.
“My sister just came back from work and wanted to rest,” said a distraught family member who asked not to be named. “She was lying down when this happened. How can someone die like this in their own home?”

Investigators found the metal support structure holding the 5,000-liter tank had rusted through. The building’s landlord, currently abroad, claimed in a phone interview that he relied on a contractor to maintain the property.

Lagos State Building Control Agency has cordoned off the property and launched an investigation. This marks the third building-related fatality in Lekki this year.

Cynthia, an accountant at a nearby firm, is survived by her parents and two siblings. Friends describe her as a vibrant, hardworking woman with plans to relocate abroad next month.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning has ordered immediate integrity tests on all overhead tanks in high-density neighborhoods. Funeral arrangements for Cynthia are pending.

Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba (formerly 2Face), has confirmed his separation from his wife, Annie Idibia.

Taking to his social media platforms, 2Baba shared that he and Annie have decided to part ways temporarily, adding that the process of formalizing their separation in court is underway. Although he later deleted the post, the singer went on to clarify in a video that the news is true and that his account had not been hacked.

The announcement has left many fans shocked and heartbroken, particularly those who have closely followed the couple’s love story. Annie, an accomplished Nollywood actress, and 2Baba have been admired as one of Nigeria’s most iconic celebrity couples.

The two tied the knot in a high-profile wedding in 2012 and have two children together. Their marriage has faced challenges in the past, with publicized disputes over alleged infidelity and family disagreements. However, the couple always managed to reconcile, earning the admiration of fans who saw them as a symbol of resilience in the entertainment industry.

This attack follows a similar mass kidnapping in December, where victims were freed after a ransom was paid. Zamfara state and other parts of northwest Nigeria have long suffered from violence by armed gangs, or “bandits,” who regularly engage in kidnappings, killings, and destruction of property.

A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom (UK) has been detained after he allegedly impregnated not one but three women: his wife, his wife’s mother, and his wife’s sister. The arrest has stunned the neighbourhood and ignited heated discussion.

The guy, whose name has been suppressed for legal reasons, was arrested after an investigation was launched in response to concerns voiced by members of his own family. When all three ladies began showing pregnancy symptoms at the same time, suspicions quickly grew and law enforcement was called in to investigate.

The arrest has shocked the community and opened up heated debates about social mores, personal responsibility, and the limits of the law. Concerns have been voiced concerning possible manipulation and misuse of power within the family.

The media on a global scale have paid close attention to this extremely rare instance. This incident has inspired broader discussions about the significance of consent, limits, and ethical issues in close relationships, and it serves as a sobering reminder of the complexity and fragility of family ties.
