Nine Arrested in Nigeria for Eating Publicly on First Day of Ramadan

Nigerian Islamic police in Kano State have arrested nine Muslims for allegedly eating in public on the first day of Ramadan.

The detainees seven men and two women reportedly told authorities they were unaware that the holy month had officially begun. Ramadan requires adult Muslims to fast from sunrise to sunset.

Kano, a predominantly Muslim state in Nigeria, operates Islamic Sharia law alongside the country’s secular legal system. Enforcement of religious compliance is carried out by the Hisbah, the state’s Islamic morality police.

During Ramadan, Hisbah officers patrol markets, restaurants, and public spaces to ensure Muslims observe the fast. Non-Muslims are not required to fast under the law.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what penalties the nine individuals may face, as investigations continue.

Tinubu Orders Security Forces to End Killings in Benue State as Pope, Amnesty Condemn Massacre

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered Nigerian security agencies to immediately stop the wave of violent attacks plaguing Benue State, where more than 200 people have been killed in just a few days.

The President condemned the killings as “inhuman and anti-progress” following protests in Makurdi, the state capital, where residents demanded action to protect communities under attack.

The violence linked to a long-running conflict between herders and farmers continues to escalate. Data from Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited shows over 1,000 deaths recorded in the state between May 2023 and May 2025 alone.

Most recently, a massacre in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, on the night of 13th/14th June, claimed the lives of around 200 people, many of whom were internally displaced persons being sheltered at a local Catholic mission.

On Sunday, Pope Leo offered a heartfelt prayer for the victims, calling it a “terrible massacre.” During the Angelus in Rome, the pontiff said he was thinking especially of the “rural Christian communities of Benue State who have been relentless victims of violence.” He prayed for “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International Nigeria issued a strong statement, calling on the government to “immediately end the almost daily bloodshed” and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The Benue crisis stems largely from land disputes and resource pressure between Fulani herders, who are mostly Muslim, and the Christian farming communities of the Middle Belt. Climate change, desertification, and shrinking arable land are pushing herders southward, intensifying these clashes.

Baba Othman Ngelzarma, a Fulani community leader, denied his people’s involvement in the recent killings, stating: “Our people are not behind the Benue killings.”

Despite previous security efforts, including federal joint task forces and the recent establishment of Forest Guards, analysts say the situation demands both military strategy and economic policy.

Security analyst Kabir Adamu recommended the deployment of intelligence-based special forces and the creation of equitable grazing zones to reduce tensions.

Public affairs commentator Sam Philip criticized the government for focusing on Boko Haram and kidnappings in other regions, saying the Benue conflict has been “ignored for too long.”

As Nigeria’s leadership faces renewed pressure from both global voices and citizens, many in Benue are still left wondering when lasting peace will finally come.

Gunmen Kidnap 46 in Zamfara State Raid, Nigeria

Nigerian Man Nabbed For Running Drug Ring In Australia

A 49-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Dirichukwu Patrick Nweke, has been arrested in connection with an alleged $9 million drug operation running out of Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney, Australia.

Nweke, who was awaiting deportation at the centre, and another man were accused of dealing large amounts of methylamphetamine using an encrypted messaging service.

NWS Police in a statement on Saturday, July 27, 2024, said they stormed Villawood Detention Centre, where they allegedly found two kilograms of meth worth $165,000 hidden inside porridge boxes.

They also found three mobile phones during a search of a unit at the centre on July 11.

Nweke has been charged with multiple offences including directing a criminal group and supplying a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs, DailyMail reports.

Two kilograms of methylamphetamine and $169,000 in cash linked to the syndicate were previously seized by officers, police said on Saturday.

On Wednesday, detectives uncovered 750 grams of methylamphetamine and 90 grams of heroin in a toilet bowl during a search of a home in Liverpool.

It’s alleged the find was evidence of ‘an attempt to dispose of the drugs’, while heroin was also found on the bathroom floor and $325,000 cash and an encrypted electronic device were also recovered.

Police also arrested a 24-year-old man they allege was a runner for the man in detention. He’s been charged with two counts of supplying a prohibited drug, participating in a criminal group and other offences.

Both men were refused bail following brief appearances in court.
