The Western Cape High Court found them guilty of multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, gang membership, and, in Fortuin’s case, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

In June 2020, the pair opened fire on a shack in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, mistakenly believing rival gang members were inside, but instead Nathan and six others were present, enjoying a meal.

Nathan was killed instantly, while two men, aged 29 and 37, were injured in the attack. The court heard that Fortuin and Cloete had chased Alfredo Titus and Ridwaan Smith, members of the Mobster gang, into the property, but incorrectly targeted the shack where the victims were sitting.

Similar congratulatory messages came from the office of Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and many political figures.

Ms. Batula Ahmed Gaballe, the chairperson of the influential Somali Women Association, welcomed the election of Ms. Samatar.

“The election of Ms. Samatar to co-lead the Somali parliament is the first step towards greater female participation in decision-making at a national level,” she said.

Later on Thursday evening, the legislators voted for the position of the second deputy speaker.

Mr. Abdullahi Omar Abshirow won the contest with 146 votes against the 91 obtained by outgoing second deputy speaker Mahad Abdalla Awad.

On Tuesday, the Upper House of the Parliament (Senate) elected its speaker and two deputy speakers while on Wednesday and Thursday, the Lower House elected its speaker and two deputy speakers.

In a joint statement, Somalia’s international supporters welcomed the election of Somalia’s parliamentary leadership.

The International Partners that signed the statement are the new African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, European Union (EU), Finland, France, Germany, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Ireland, Italy, Kenya, League of Arab States (LAS), Norway, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Qatar, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, and United Nations.

“(We) welcome the successful elections for leadership positions in the Upper House on 26 April 2022 and the House of the People on 27-28 April 2022,” they said. “We congratulate the newly elected Speakers and Deputy Speakers as they assume their important responsibilities at this critical moment for Somalia.”

“After the protracted delays and obstacles in choosing the members of parliament, the election of the parliamentary leadership is a major achievement,” the statement added, while also urging the leadership to hasten the process of the presidential election.

“We urge that election of the President now be completed promptly, peacefully, and credibly, so that Somalia’s elected leaders can address national priorities for the benefit of all its citizens.”

In Somalia’s indirect elections, once the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament elect their speakers and deputy speaker, the two Houses are required to hold a joint session to vote for the president.

Following the completion of the speaker vote, attention now shifts to the presidential election, whose date is yet to be set.

This year, the contest is expected to be tough. Incumbent President Farmaajo is expected to be challenged by strong candidates from the Coalition of the (opposition) Presidential Candidates that include former presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, as well as ex-Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, Puntland State President Said, Abdullahi Deni, and other former ministers.

Somalia’s complex indirect electoral system is yet to elect about 20 MPs from Jubbaland and Hirshabelle states.

Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT), the top organ assigned to manage the election, decided to release two of the four seats earlier withheld for not being elected through fair procedures.

The new development emerged after a FEIT delegation led by Chairman Muse Quelle arrived in Baidoa town, the interim capital of the South West State.

The trip was meant for FEIT officials to hold talks with the state’s leadership, clan elders, and civil society figures in order to sort out grievances over 3 of the 4 seats removed from the list of the elected MPs to be sworn in.

Following intensive overnight meetings in Baidoa, the FEIT delegation and elected legislators that hail from the South West agreed that the re-election of the questioned third seat can be repeated at a convenient time.

The mutual understanding between FEIT and the South West led senators and legislators to call off their boycott of the ceremony.

On Thursday, the senators and MPs that had opted to boycott the remaining electoral process traveled to Mogadishu and went straight to the ‘big tent’ to receive both the certificates and Identification Cards (IDs).

However, it seemed that when FEIT solves one problem, another emerges.

Hirshabelle State, an authority in Central Somalia, issued a statement strongly demanding FEIT to release the seat labeled as HOP#086 that was won by Fahad Yasin Haji Dahir, the former director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and current security advisor to President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

The statement to FEIT was titled, ‘Release Seat number HOP#086 without condition,’ further stating that the mentioned seat was won fairly and freely and in accordance with the September 17, 2020, electoral agreement.

“The voting for seat number HOP#086 was held in the presence of the State Electoral Implementation Team (SEIT), the FEIT, and the Electoral Dispute Resolution Committee,” Hirshabelle said, adding that there were no complaints from the seat’s clan elders, related civil society actors and other candidates vying for the seat.

The Hirshabelle State warned against what it termed “the sinister acts by FEIT to undermine the completion of the election.”

Later on Thursday, the Vice-President of Hirshabelle Yusuf Ahmed Hagar aka Dabageed criticized the Office of Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and the FEIT for withholding the seat HOP#086.

“What is fishy about seat HOP#086 that was fairly elected in Beledweyne town in Hirshabelle State?” questioned Vice-President Hagar.

Although the swearing-in of the legislators began Thursday in Mogadishu, it is envisaged to last for some time until all the vacant seats are filled.

So far, according to FEIT, 251 newly elected MPs have received or are entitled to receive their credentials and to be sworn in. 24 seats are still vacant.

Once the remaining electoral processes are cleared, each house will elect a speaker and deputies.

After that, a joint session will be held to elect a federal president. The date is yet to be announced.

Abdiaziz Guled aka Afrika, the Director of state-owned Radio Mogadishu was killed in a targeted suicide bombing as he rode in a car with a colleague identified as Sharmarke Mohamed Warsame, the Director of Somali National TV, also a government media outlet.

Somalia police said that a man wearing a suicide vest approached the vehicle in a busy street in Mogadishu as they left a restaurant and detonated it, killing Afrika instantly and wounding his colleague who is still fighting for his life at Mogadishu’s Madina Hospital.

Born on December 12, 1979, Afrika’s radio career rose especially in the late 2000s as he took on Shabaab’s violent extremism campaign. The group took him on as enemy number one. Local press freedom lobby, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NusoJ) suggested the journalist was targeted for dedicated coverage against the group’s violent activities.

“He was a brave journalist who was best known for producing incisive special reports about Al Shabaab attacks in Somalia and interviews with Shabaab captives in detention,” said Omar Faruk Osman, the Secretary-General of NUSOJ in a statement.

“It is another sad day again for Somalia when we are forced to witness the needless death of another journalist on the frontlines of duty. We condemn this cowardly act against yet another journalist. We send our most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in Radio Mogadishu. Our quest for a free and just society will not be deterred by the acts of intimidation,” Osman added, calling on the Federal government to urgently investigate the killing.

According to the lobby, the murdered journalist had planned to take his mother for medical treatment to India today.

The two journalists had campaigned to have the state-owned media outlets transformed into public media houses, rather than remain mouthpieces of the government as it is today.

On Sunday, Somalia’s President Mohamed Farmaajo said Afrika had been “martyred” for its role in calling out al-Shabaab.

“He spent his career rebuilding our nation and continuously exposing the evil of terrorism to save Somalia using the powerful media tool,” Farmaajo’s Spokesman, Abdirashid M Hashi said in a Twitter post.

This is the second death of a journalist this year, directly linked to al-Shabaab. In March, NUSOJ said another reporter Jamal Farah Adan, a freelance Journalist whose radio programs were also critical of Al-Shabaab and its operations was shot dead in Galmudug State.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Somalia is still the most dangerous place for journalists in Africa, having seen more than 70 journalists killed over the last 30 years. And the Reporters without Borders (RSF) says Somalia is only better than two countries in the world, out of 163 surveyed last year in safety for journalists.

“The pressure on journalists can come from many quarters, especially as much of the country is controlled by non-state entities or by autonomous regional governments that either do not or only barely recognise the central government’s authority,” RSF says.

The three, Taurai Sithole, Caroline Mlambo, and Lamedy Matavire from Dinhe Primary School under Chief Neshuro claim the late Tarisai Chihisani of Mashavele Village stole their household property worth over R50 000 during school holidays in March this year.

The matter only came to light during Chihisani’s burial when some mourners managed to positively identify some of their stolen blankets and utensils which were part of Chihisani’s loot. The stuff was identified being placed in the grave together with the body, a ritual commonly performed in Mwenezi.

Upon seeing some of the teacher’s stolen property being placed in the grave, eyewitnesses allegedly tipped off Sithole.
“We lost property worth R50 000 and so far we have managed to recover only something worth around R15 000, “said Sithole.

Sithole revealed that the flowers that were put on Chihisani’s grave were also stolen from his kitchen, and he is now pushing for the matter to be heard at Chief Neshuro’s traditional court after the matter proved too heavy for the local headman.

“The blankets and several property which Chihisani was buried with are our belongings which he stole. The flowers which are currently decorating his grave were stolen from my kitchen and I bought that flower in Harare sometime last year.

We are pushing for his exhumation because we need our belongings,” he said.

Chief Neshuro’s secretary Pinias Shoko confirmed the case and said the matter is due to be heard any time soon

That happened in the early hours of March 26, 2016, when Muna was 19. Earlier this week, she finally decided to speak out.

“I have suffered too long,” she said.

On Tuesday, Muna became one of the first people in Minnesota’s Somali and Oromo community to publicly share her experience of being sexually assaulted when she was a teenager.

By Thursday, more than 4,000 people had shared her tweet. All of a sudden, dozens of Somali women across the diaspora broke their silence over the violence they had suffered — sexualt assault by family members, childhood sexual abuse, rape and molestation by teachers.

What once was considered a taboo and stigma in the Somali and Oromo culture suddenly was out in the public.

Against cultural norms, digitally savvy East African women in their 20s used their platforms to break cultural prohibitions against discussing something that could bring shame to their family.

Muna only reported the alleged assault to a couple of her friends. Sahan Journal has independently corroborated Muna’s account of the allegations with two of them.

Muna, who has identified the man in her tweets and has photos and text messages related to the alleged assault, said she’s considering filing a complaint against the man. Sahan Journal is not naming the alleged attacker because he was not charged with a crime.

Sahan Journal has reached out to the man via a text message. A few minutes later, a family member of the alleged attacker called a Sahan Journal reporter and threatened him with a lawsuit.

Not long before that, the alleged perpetrator posted a statement on his Twitter account saying:

“I was falsely accused of sexual assault. Let me say it very clearly, I vehemently deny the allegations against me and will pursue all legal avenues to prove the false nature of these claims.”

But to many women, she is a hero.

“Muna, you started a movement!! I’m from Minnesota too,” one woman told Muna on Twitter. “Let me know if you need any help and resources. Sending you love and support.”

“You are not alone in this fight,” another one told her. “Somali women have suffered for far too long whether in Somalia or diaspora.”

Ramla Bile, a community organizer who has been following the social media posts of s*xual assault survivors, said many East African youth don’t have avenues to be heard by community leaders or organizations. She applauded the survivors’ courage to speak out and shift the narrative.

“Because it went down on Twitter, it became a powerful community conversation led by Gen Z and has been far more effective in shifting the narrative than any piece of legislation or media article ever would,” Ramla said. “They are tackling rape culture head on, teaching each other about consent, and naming what solidarity with survivors looks like.”

In the past, Ramla said, women and girls who had been assaulted were privately shamed or expected to quietly move on. “Collectively, society has failed to eliminate predatory behavior,” Ramla said.

“As women continue to speak up and come forward, we need to believe them and make sure that they are getting the healing and support that they need.”

”This is also a moment for men to hold each other accountable,” she added.

Fartun Weli, executive director of Isuroon, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit that helps and advocates for Somali women and families, said she will set up an emergency helpline and mobilize a legal team to support women who come out with stories of sexual assault.

“We have been waiting for this kind of movement to start,” Fartun said. “I know there are a lot of victims out there. Young girls who have been molested. Young girls who have been raped.”

Muna, who grew up in Minneapolis’ Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, participated in the protests against the killing of George Floyd. She was watching when the Minneapolis police 3rd Precinct building was burned.

“That was the biggest inspiration to me,” she said when asked what motivated her to speak out. “That police station has terrorized Somalis in [south Minneapolis] for how many years? And watching that burn, it just inspired me.”

“I’m going to make as much noise as possible for people like me,” she added. “I don’t want people to feel that pain I felt. I never thought I would make it to the age of 23. I have always been telling people, ‘I’m going to kill myself. I’m not going to make it this far.’”

When Muna posted her experience publicly, she said she received death threats from people close to the man who allegedly assaulted her.

Now, she’s considering leaving Minnesota for safety reasons.

“I can’t live safely here anymore,” she said. “I am not safe in Minnesota.”

But the support she’s received since breaking her silence and a drive to protect other women have encouraged her to keep speaking out.

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said its troops clashed with Al-Shabaab fighters who had laid a roadside ambush on Monday, northeast of Janale in Lower Shabelle, a hotbed for the insurgents.

Regular attacks against civilian, government targets

AMISOM troops, which support Somalia’s ill-equipped national army in the fight against Al-Shabaab, have been accused of killing civilians during past operations.

US forces, which regularly target the Islamists with airstrikes, announced in April that one of its drone attacks the previous year resulted in two civilian deaths.

It was just the second time the US military admitted to civilian deaths from its drone programme in Somalia, though rights groups say the true figure is higher.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda affiliate in the Horn of Africa, has fought for over a decade to topple the internationally-backed Somali government in Mogadishu.

In 2011, AMISOM forces pushed Al-Shabaab out of their holdouts in Mogadishu, and the insurgents have since lost much of the territory they once controlled.

But they still carry out regular attacks against civilian and government targets, inflicting mass casualties not just in Somalia, but elsewhere in the region.
