A Malawi-born medical doctor based in South Africa, McBride Nkhalamba, has donated K5 million to support efforts aimed at repatriating Malawians displaced by ongoing xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa.

The donation was announced by social media influencer Stanley Onjezani Kenani, who is among those coordinating fundraising initiatives to assist affected Malawians seeking to return home.

In a social media post, Kenani expressed gratitude to Dr. Nkhalamba, describing the donation as a significant act of compassion and leadership during a difficult period for many Malawians living in South Africa.

According to Kenani, the contribution has pushed the fundraising total to K11.8 million. The campaign has also facilitated the transfer of R400,000 to South Africa to help transport affected Malawians back to Malawi using two buses.

Dr. Nkhalamba joins a growing list of individuals, businesses and organisations that have stepped forward to support Malawians affected by the unrest.

Meanwhile, the donation has attracted widespread praise on social media, with some users commending Dr. Nkhalamba’s willingness to act quickly during the crisis.

Among those who commented was congressman  Sylvester Ayuba James, who praised the doctor’s leadership qualities and ability to make swift decisions.

“Ma delegates a Kongiresi, chidodo ayi ayi. Munthu ndi yemweyi, ochangamuka. We need someone who can make quick decisions and has an idea about the economy,” wrote James in a comment that has since generated discussion online.

The fundraising drive comes as hundreds of Malawians continue seeking assistance following recent attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, with authorities and humanitarian groups working to facilitate voluntary repatriation efforts.

The High Court of South Africa sitting in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, has sentenced a 35-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his girlfriend in Carolina.

Innocent Sthembiso Maseko was found guilty of killing Mbali Lucy Ngubeni after a violent argument at their home in Silobela.

The court heard that the couple began arguing in their bedroom on 20 August 2024, and the dispute escalated into a physical fight.

During the altercation, Maseko poured petrol over Ngubeni and set her alight.

Despite suffering severe burns, Ngubeni managed to escape and called for help from a friend in another room, who extinguished the flames.

She was taken to hospital but died a week later due to her injuries.

Maseko denied being present during the incident, but the court relied on witness testimony and Ngubeni’s statement before her death to convict him.

The judge ruled that there were no compelling reasons for a lighter sentence, imposed life imprisonment, and declared Maseko unfit to possess a firearm.

Police in South Africa have arrested the son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in connection with an attempted murder case.

The suspect, Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, 28, was taken into custody following a shooting incident in Johannesburg.

The Mokopane Regional Court in South Africa has sentenced 25-year-old Yvonne Maja to an effective 18 years’ direct imprisonment after finding her guilty of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

She was handed the sentence on 9 February 2026, following her conviction on 1 December 2025.

Maja received 18 years for attempted murder and two years for assault GBH, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.

The charges stem from an incident on 13 October 2024 in Mogoto Mabereng, Zebediela, where she confronted her ex-boyfriend at his home and found him with his new partner, Mmapeu Hlanga.

During an argument, Maja insulted the 27-year-old woman before allegedly pouring acid on her, causing severe injuries, while a 28-year-old man also sustained minor injuries in the attack.

Both victims were taken to Zebediela Hospital, and the female victim was later transferred to Mankweng Hospital, where she was admitted for about seven months.

Maja was arrested on 14 February 2025, granted R3,000 bail at the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court, and the case was later transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court for trial

Mohammed Suliman Vawda, the man widely identified as the operator of the controversial X (formerly Twitter) account @Goolammv, has been found dead in his room at a luxury hotel in Sandton, South Africa, just hours before police were set to arrest him on multiple criminal charges.

According to sources cited by The Star, police officers arrived at the hotel along 5 Benmore Road at around 9:30am on Tuesday, intending to take the 50-year-old into custody on charges including fraud, cyberbullying, hate speech, and publishing defamatory content linked to his online activities.

However, upon entering his room, officers found Vawda lying unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but he was pronounced dead at the hotel.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened, adding that the exact cause of death remains unknown pending a postmortem examination.

Vawda was publicly unmasked in July 2024 following an investigation by Independent Media, which linked him to the once-anonymous X account that had, for years, targeted politicians, journalists, government officials, and business leaders with inflammatory posts. The account was frequently accused of spreading hate speech, cyber harassment, and manipulating public opinion.

Despite several complaints being lodged against him  including a crimen injuria case opened by former Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu  Vawda had not previously been arrested, a situation that drew criticism over delays in addressing digital abuse and online crimes.

Police say investigations into both the circumstances surrounding Vawda’s death and the criminal cases linked to his activities are still ongoing.

Preliminary investigations into the tragic scholar transport crash in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa, have revealed that the driver of the minibus taxi involved did not have a valid driver’s licence, Gauteng’s Provincial Department of Transport has confirmed.

Officials have also indicated that the minibus may not have been properly licensed to transport schoolchildren at the time of the accident.

The crash occurred on Monday morning along Fred Droste Road, as learners were being transported to school. Fourteen children lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

A 23-year-old University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) student, Simphiwe Zinhle Mchunu, who went missing last month, has been found dead, allegedly murdered and buried in a suitcase at her boyfriend’s rented home in Umlazi, south of Durban.

Mchunu, a final-year student pursuing a teaching degree, was reported missing after her family lost contact with her. Relatives travelled from Ladysmith to Umlazi to search for her and even combed through the yard of her residence—unaware that her body was allegedly buried beneath the ground they were standing on.

Police investigations later led to the gruesome discovery of her remains, reportedly stuffed into a suitcase and buried at the property.

Her boyfriend, Themba Xaba (22), initially told investigators that the couple had argued and that Simphiwe had left the house carrying a suitcase. However, suspicions grew after police recovered her mobile phones and bank card in Xaba’s possession, contradicting his version of events.

Xaba has since been taken into custody as investigations continue. Police are expected to charge him in connection with the murder as forensic and post-mortem examinations are completed.

The killing has sparked outrage and renewed calls across South Africa for stronger action against gender-based violence, particularly against young women.

A manhunt is underway in South Africa following a deadly mass shooting at a tavern in Bekkersdal, near Johannesburg, that left nine people dead and at least 10 others injured.

Police say the attack occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday when about 12 unidentified gunmen arrived at the tavern in two vehicles and opened fire on patrons. Seven men and two women were killed in the attack.

Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana said the gunmen were armed with pistols and at least one AK-47 rifle, and described the attack as “unprovoked.”

“The poor patrons were just enjoying themselves when people came and shot,” said Kekana,

He added that the attackers continued firing randomly as people fled the scene.

Two victims were shot outside the tavern while trying to escape, while another victim was a taxi driver who had dropped off a passenger nearby.

Residents described scenes of horror following the shooting. Nokuthula Bhukwana, who arrived shortly after the incident, told Reuters that bodies were scattered across the floor and that some injured victims had to be transported to a clinic using wheelbarrows due to the severity of the situation.

Another resident said gun violence has become a regular occurrence in Bekkersdal, describing nightly gunfire as a source of constant fear.
“It is terrorising our communities,” the resident said.

Local deputy mayor Nontombi Molatlhegi said residents are afraid to speak out and identify those responsible, citing intimidation and fear. She also criticised inadequate policing resources and called on the national government to deploy the military to help restore safety.

South African traffic authorities on Thursday intercepted an overloaded bus on the N1 bypass in Polokwane after discovering it was carrying nearly double its permitted capacity.

The 65-seater bus, which was travelling from Gauteng to Malawi, was found transporting 117 passengers, including 15 minors. According to authorities, the bus was initially stopped near Peter Mokaba Stadium before being immobilised close to the Polokwane weighbridge and redirected to the Provincial Traffic Control Centre (PTCC).

When officers moved in, the driver allegedly attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended, restrained and arrested.

Police say the bus will remain at the PTCC until excess passengers are removed and all required fines are paid. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Authorities have reiterated warnings against overloading public transport vehicles, citing serious safety risks to passengers, especially during long-distance travel.
