According to BBC News Africa, some bridges between Khartoum and the adjoining cities of Omdurman and Bahri have closed ahead of the rally

Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok resigned on Sunday, amid a political deadlock and widespread protests following a military coup that derailed the country’s fragile transition to democracy. Hamdok said the country was at a “dangerous turning point that threatens its whole survival.”

Furthermore, Sudan’s coup leader rejected calls by the troika on Sudan — comprising the United States, Britain, and Norway — and the European Union (EU) to appoint a new prime minister in accordance with a constitutional declaration which gives the right of his nomination to the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), the Sudan Tribune reported on Wednesday.

After the resignation of Hamdok, the troika and the EU on Tuesday urged the commander in chief of the Sudanese army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to select a prime minister after dialogue with his partners in the transitional authority that has been in place since 2019, the Sudan Tribune reported.
A fresh wave of anti-coup protests flared up across Sudan in December as demonstrators continued to call for an end to the military rule established in early October.

The Sudanese Professionals Association, which led the protests on Thursday, issued a statement the evening before, urging citizens to get involved in demanding civilian rule, Xinhua news agency reported.

Sudan’s top general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Sunday denied that military and paramilitary members of the transitional administration could run for the country’s July 2023 elections.

“The president of the Sovereign Council denied what the Agence France-Presse reported about the participation of the military in the upcoming elections,” his office said in a statement. Sudan has been run by a joint military-civilian ruling council since August 2019, but civilian members were changed following a coup in October this year.

AFP asked Burhan in an interview on Saturday whether the military components and the paramilitary members of the transitional Council will be able to participate in elections planned for 2023.

Burhan responded by saying the August 2019 deal had “included a clear clause that all participants of the transitional period will not be allowed to take part of the period that directly follows it
But a landmark 2020 peace deal with rebel groups “granted some participants to the transitional period the right to become part of the government” that followed the transition, he said.

Burhan — Sudan’s de facto leader since the ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir in April 2019 — removed the civilian government and declared a state of emergency on October 25, upending the planned three-year transition to full civilian rule.

Burhan’s interview with AFP was one of a series he gave to international media a day after UN chief Antonio Guterres, in a report submitted to the Security Council, called Sudan hostile to journalists. On November 21, Burhan signed a deal to reinstate Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who was ousted in the coup and kept for weeks under house arrest.

The Burhan-Hamdok agreement was welcomed by the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), Saudi Arabia and Egypt. It was also cautiously greeted by Britain and the United States.

But critics have lambasted it as “whitewashing” and accused Hamdok of “betrayal”. Pro-democracy activists vowed to maintain pressure on the military-civilian authority. The top general has long insisted the military’s move on October 25 “was not a coup” but a step “to rectify the transition.

South Sudan’s second deputy speaker of the recently reconstituted parliament has appealed to lawmakers to take up English classes to easy communication between themselves in the country’s official language.

Rt. Hon. Awerial Aluong while speaking at an event this past week said some of the parliamentarians are facing difficulties in participating in deliberations which are usually done in English as the “official language’ of business in the assembly.

While some members of the public are asking the parliament to use translation softwares, others say it is essential for members of the house to undertake intensive English courses.

“He has done well. Some of them are embarrassing themselves and the country,” said a commentator, according to Talk of Juba.

“The deputy speaker must be new in that parliament, the conduct of business allows any member to communicate in any language that they know better as long as they take permission from the speaker, then the speaker will ask for translation. It is not a law that they have to use English,” argues another.

Sudan’s army said earlier Thursday that a new government was on the way.

“We are considering all internal and external initiatives to serve the national interest,” Burhan’s media advisor Taher Abouhaga said. “The government formation is imminent.”

The ministers’ release came shortly after a phone call between Burhan and UN chief Antonio Guterres, who personally appealed to the military chief to restore the democratic transition.

Guterres encouraged “all efforts toward resolving the political crisis in Sudan and urgently restoring the constitutional order and Sudan’s transitional process”, a United Nations statement said.

Sudan has since August 2019 been ruled by a joint civilian-military council as part of the now derailed transition to full civilian rule.

Deepening splits and long-simmering tensions between the military and civilians have marred the transition.

Western diplomats have called for Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s reinstatement, while Arab powerhouses such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE urged the civilian-led transition to be restored.

Burhan, a veteran general who served under Bashir’s three-decades-long rule, insisted the army takeover was “not a coup” but a move “to rectify the course of the transition”.

Earlier in January, a military went down in Lakes State, leaving four people injured, according to Rumbek aviation authority.

In August last year, a chartered plane owned by South West Aviation Company crashed shortly after taking off from Juba International Airport, killing eight people on board.

A South Link aircraft in July last year crashed in defunct Fangak State in Greater Jonglei State carrying humanitarian aid staff. There was no fatality in the incident.

On February 8, 2021, the International Air Transport Association in a letter to South Sudan’s civil aviation authority called for the implementation of safety standards.

The association stressed that many interventions have not resulted in a clear improvement in safety performance.

In addition, the aviation body claimed that Juba is considered a challenging operational environment due to the following reported deficiencies; air traffic services, industrial action by civilian air traffic service personnel and deployment of military air traffic controllers to replace civilian personnel among others.

The reported house arrest comes shortly after Sudan’s military arrested Hamdok’s media advisor.

Unidentified military personnel also arrested four cabinet ministers and a civilian member of the ruling sovereign council, local reports said.

The arrests and Hamdok’s home detention come a month after a failed coup attempt. At the time, a top government source said the plotters had attempted to take over the state media building in September but “they failed”.
