Tanzanians are casting their ballots in the country’s seventh general election since the return of multiparty democracy in 1992.

More than 37.7 million registered voters are expected to vote at over 99,000 polling stations across the mainland and Zanzibar.

The poll is taking place amid divisions within the opposition. The main opposition party, Chadema, is boycotting the election, citing the need for electoral reforms, while ACT-Wazalendo’s candidate, Luhaga Mpina, was disqualified over legal objections.

Tensions have flared on Election Day, with protests erupting in parts of the country. Reports indicate that some demonstrators have destroyed polling stations, prompting security forces to tighten control in affected areas.

Seventeen candidates are contesting the presidency, including incumbent Samia Suluhu Hassan of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. local time and will close at 4:00 p.m., with results expected within 72 hours.

A friendly international football match in Tanzania came to a dramatic halt when a large swarm of bees invaded the pitch, forcing players, officials, and media personnel to stop the game for several minutes.

Ally Kibao, a prominent official of Tanzania’s main opposition party CHADEMA, was found dead with signs of severe beating and acid burns on his face.

A Tanzanian woman named Latifah Musa has gained widespread attention after revealing that she keeps a large snake in her house for money rituals.

In an interview, Latifah shared that her desperation for money started after losing a loved one due to unpaid medical bills.

A friend introduced her to a native doctor, who provided the snake to bring her wealth. The snake’s growth is directly linked to her increasing wealth.

Latifah was instructed not to sleep with a man more than once a month to avoid making the snake jealous.

She recounted a near-death experience when she broke this rule and slept with a man twice in one month.

Her skin began to peel, and she looked aged, as the snake became extremely angry. She explained that she must also be intimate with the snake to maintain their relationship.

There are specific phrases she says to the snake to obtain the funds she needs.

Flooding in Tanzania caused by weeks of heavy rain has killed 155 people and affected more than 200,000 others, the prime minister said Thursday.

That is more than double the number of deaths reported two weeks ago as the amount of rainfall increases, especially in the coastal region and the capital, Dar es Salaam.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa told parliament that the El Niño climate pattern has worsened the ongoing rainy season, causing flooding and destroying roads, bridges and railways. Flooded schools have been closed and emergency services have rescued people marooned by the flood waters.

Majaliwa warned those living in low-lying areas to move to higher ground and urged district officials to ensure that provisions meant for those whose homes were washed away go to those in need of the supplies. He said more than 51,000 households have been affected by the rains.

The East African region is experiencing heavy rains, with flooding also reported in neighboring Burundi and Kenya.

In Kenya, 35 people were reported dead as of Monday, and the number was expected to increase as flooding continues across the country.

In the Mathare slum in the capital, Nairobi, at least four bodies were retrieved from flooded houses on Wednesday. Local media reported that more bodies were retrieved from the Mathare River.

Kenyan President William Ruto chaired a multi-agency flood response meeting on Thursday and directed the National Youth Service to provide land for people in flood-affected areas.

Nearly 60 people have died since the start of this month in heavy rains and flooding that has hit several parts of Tanzania, the government said.

The coastal region of the East African country is one of the worst affected, with floods damaging thousands of farms there, Mobhare Matinyi, the government spokesperson, said in a statement on Sunday.

“Serious flood effects are experienced in the coast region where 11 people have so far died,” Mr Matinyi added.

He said 58 deaths have been recorded so far from the flooding.

Last Friday, eight schoolchildren died after their bus plunged into a flooded gorge in the north of the country.

April marks the peak of Tanzania’s rainy season. This year has seen the heaviest rainfall of recent years.

The heavy rains have also led to the deaths of at least 13 people and displaced some 15,000 in neighbouring Kenya, the UN said.

The El Niño weather phenomenon has worsened this year’s seasonal rains, weather experts said.

Twenty-two people have died following a landslide at an illegal mine in northern Tanzania, officials said.

The incident occurred at Ng’alita mine in Bariadi district, Simiyu region on Saturday, district commissioner Simon Simalenga said.

It occurred after a group of people started mining in an area where activity was restricted due to heavy rains, he told Reuters news agency.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her “great sadness” at the news.

“These fellow Tanzanians were small miners in the area, trying to earn a living for themselves, their families,” she said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

At least 76 people were killed in landslides caused by heavy rains in northern Tanzania last week, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who visited the scene, said on Thursday.

“This disaster cost the lives of 76 people in the Katesh region,” about 300 km north of the capital Dodoma, lamented the head of state after meeting survivors.

These torrential rains during the night from Saturday to Sunday “are also a wake-up call for the government to take the necessary measures to detect the signs and alert people in advance to avoid serious consequences like these”, continued Samia Suluhu Hassan, specifying that this “catastrophe also destroyed infrastructure and economic activity”.

“We now have the task of restoring the situation here,” she also declared, after having cut short her trip to COP28 in Dubai to go to the scene. A previous report given Tuesday by the authorities reported 65 deaths.

Images broadcast following the bad weather by local television channels showed streets littered with the debris of houses. These landslides displaced some 600 people, government spokesperson Mobhare Matinyi said on Tuesday.

East Africa has been hit for weeks by torrential rains and floods linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which have displaced more than a million people in Somalia and caused more than 300 deaths in the region.

El Niño, typically associated with rising temperatures, droughts in some parts of the world, and heavy rains in others, is expected to last through April.

This meteorological phenomenon has already wreaked havoc in eastern Africa. From October 1997 to January 1998, gigantic floods fueled by torrential rains it caused caused more than 6,000 deaths in five countries in the region.

British Actor Idris Elba plans to open a film studio in Tanzania after holding initial talks with President Samia Suluhu Hassan, according to a presidential aide.

The actor met President Samia on the side-lines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this month.

“The president met with Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina, they are keen to invest in a film studio in Tanzania. The talks are in the initial stage but if everything goes well then the studio will benefit not only Tanzania but east and central Africa,” said Zuhura Yunus, the director of presidential communications.

Since coming to power, President Samia has embarked on a series of reforms in foreign policy, business, trade and investment.

Tanzanian students will commence learning in English, the government has announced.

The directive was issued by Benjamin Oganga, an officer attached to the Ministry of Education.

The Minister of Education explained that the English lessons will commence on January 9, 2022, with English Orientations for eight weeks, however, it will be implemented in Mara District.

This, he said, will help students have a better grip on the queen’s language.

“We’ve banned the use of Swahili in all our secondary schools. We need to ensure our students understand and are able to use English in accordance with the policies of Education,” he said.

The official expressed optimism the move will help students express themselves in English.

Tanzanian’s syllabus is mainly in Swahili with English as an optional subject.

Most subjects including Biology and Maths are taught in Swahili. This has led to challenges in communications and hampered international communication and trade as the country strives to interact with more than one billion global English speakers.

The move comes months after Abdulrahman Kinana the vice-Chairman of the Chama Cha Mwananchi (CCM)-Mainland while speaking during the World Kiswahili Day celebration shared that English remained the number one global language of business, industrialization, and digital transformation.

With over 200 million speakers, Kiswahili is one of the most widely used African languages, encompassing more than a dozen main dialects.

Over the centuries, this Bantu language has emerged as a common form of communication in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, in addition to the Middle East.

The Bukoba airport in north-western Tanzania has reopened after being closed following a crash that left 19 people dead.

The passenger plane crashed into Lake Victoria as it attempted to land at the airport on Sunday.

A local administrator has told the BBC that the first passenger plane was expected to land at the airport on Thursday.

Technical advisers from aircraft manufacturer, ATR, have launched an investigation into the crash. French civil aviation safety investigation experts have also been deployed to the country.

The aircraft was operated by Precision Air, Tanzania’s largest privately-owned passenger airline. It has been operating on the Dar es Salaam-Bukoba route since 1994.
