Zimbabwe’s cabinet has approved draft legislation that could extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s time in office to at least 2030 through significant changes to the country’s electoral system and presidential term structure.

The proposed reforms would replace the current system of direct presidential elections with a parliamentary vote and lengthen presidential terms from five to seven years, while maintaining a two-term limit.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the government plans to conduct public consultations before presenting the bill to parliament. The ruling Zanu-PF party holds a majority in both legislative chambers, increasing the likelihood of the proposals advancing.

Legal and constitutional experts, however, have raised concerns. They argue that altering presidential term limits would require a national referendum and contend that any such amendments should not benefit an incumbent president.

Mnangagwa, 83, assumed office in 2017 following the military-backed removal of longtime leader Robert Mugabe.

The Lilongwe Magistrates Court has ordered four Zambian nationals to pay K50,000 each or serve a six-month prison sentence for transferring exotic species without a license, and K150,000 each or serve 12 months in prison for carrying out activities involving specimens and alien invasive species.

The four — Patrick Phiri, Evans Nyirenda, Aremo Simanono, and Kennedy Muntanga — were arrested on 16 May 2025 along the Mchinji–Lilongwe road after being found with five bags of live crayfish weighing 250 kg, valued at over K3 million.

They were facing three charges:

1. Transferring exotic species without a license

2. Carrying out activity involving specimens and alien invasive species

3. Possession of uncleared goods

The court discharged the third count, ruling that it could not be applied to illegal procurements.

Regional Prosecutions Officer Saddrey Sambo expressed satisfaction with the ruling but emphasized the need to review the Aquatic and Fisheries Act, which dates back to 1997, to introduce stiffer penalties.

Markson Ngochera, Deputy Director responsible for Capture Fisheries in the Department of Fisheries, testified as a state witness. He explained that crayfish pose a serious threat to local aquatic ecosystems as they feed on fish eggs, juvenile fish, and vegetation used by native species for breeding and shelter — thereby endangering Malawi’s native fish populations.

According to a 2023 study by the Department of Fisheries, Malawi produces over 2,000 metric tonnes of Chambo annually, and the country could lose over K2.5 billion in revenue if invasive species like crayfish are introduced into local water bodies.

A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of 24 people in Zimbabwe after a head-on collision between a bus and a haulage truck near Beitbridge on Thursday 13 February 2025, police have confirmed.

According to police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, the bus was traveling from Harare to Beitbridge with 65 passengers when it attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with the truck. Authorities are still determining the exact number of injured victims.

State media reports indicate that 17 people died on the scene, while seven others succumbed to severe head injuries at a hospital in Beitbridge. Around 30 people were injured and are receiving medical treatment.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed his heartbreak over the tragedy, declaring the crash a national disaster. He assured the public that the government would cover funeral and burial expenses.

“Our nation does not deserve this at all, let alone experiencing such a bloody incident at the beginning of the year,” Mnangagwa said, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

Road accidents involving buses are common in Zimbabwe, often due to speeding and poor road conditions. The highway where the crash occurred was recently resurfaced as part of government efforts to improve infrastructure.

Police were called to Cowdray Park suburb at around 9PM after residents reported finding the body of a man inside a black Mercedes parked in the street.

Law enforcement sources said he had a large amount of cash on him in various currencies, including over US$4,000 and R19,000.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

A family in Kaptembwo, Nakuru, is mourning after Elijah Matoke Maina, 52, was attacked by his second wife, Ruth Jelang’at, on December 5, 2024.

The attack occurred around 6 am during a suspected domestic dispute, with Matoke being doused in acid. Neighbor Lilian Magomera found him crying in agony, his complexion changing from dark to pink, and his children confirmed the acid attack.

Matoke was rushed to Nakuru Level Five Hospital but later died from the burns. His brother, Bernard Angwenyi, arrived at the hospital to find Matoke in pain, while Jelang’at fled, later attempting to withdraw money from his phone and taking important documents.

Angwenyi believes the attack was premeditated, claiming Jelang’at had kept acid in the house for the purpose of the attack.

Matoke’s daughter, Clarice Mughoi, stated that her father revealed Jelang’at had woken early, went through his documents, and returned with the acid, which she poured on him, leading to his tragic death.

ZIMBABWE: A former friend of Robert Mugabe Jr. has explained why he leaked explicit videos of the late Zimbabwean leader’s son, showing him with two women. The friend also released footage of Robert Jr. allegedly assaulting another mutual friend, Nyasha Rusinga. According to Murewa TV, after the woman gave birth, Marozva, who had previously been involved with her, began to assert his claim as the biological father of the child. Social media went wild with hilarious reactions after it emerged that a newlywed bride from Bulawayo eloped with her secret lover on her wedding night.

The news about Sisasenkosi Mpofu’s decision to abandon her husband, Mbongeni Moyo, to spend the night with another man has captivated online audiences and sparked a wave of discussions on the internet.

According to B-Metro, after the wedding ceremony, Sisasenkosi Mpofu reportedly left her husband to spend the night with her secret lover, Geshom Gwatiringa, a police officer stationed at Hillside Police Station.

Moyo, a church elder at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Iminyela branch, was bewildered when his new wife returned the following day without an explanation for her absence.

Growing suspicious, Moyo decided to check her phone and discovered intimate messages exchanged between her and Gwatiringa.

Faced with the evidence, Mpofu confessed, admitting she had spent the night with her lover. This revelation escalated the situation, leading to a violent confrontation.

In the days following the incident, Moyo allegedly conspired with his brother-in-law, Fungai Mpofu, and friends Prosper Ndlovu and Allen Munhuru to confront Gwatiringa. They arrived at Gwatiringa’s home around 1 a.m., where they accused him of infidelity.

“They went to Geshom’s place and arrived at around 1 am. They found him sleeping with his wife. They knocked at the door and he came outside. One of the accused persons grabbed Geshom by his neck accusing him of cheating with a married woman,” prosecutor Christina Manyika reported during the court proceedings.

Following the incident, a police case was filed against Moyo and his accomplices, leading to their arrest. They recently appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze, facing charges of attempted murder, to which they pleaded not guilty
