Malawi Property Investment Company (Mpico Plc), has registered a profit of Mk19 billion in 2025 up from K12 billion in 2024 financial year.

The company’s General Manager, Stella Sokosa disclosed this in Blantyre on Monday during a stakeholders meeting which the company organized.

Sokosa attributed the success to higher rental income and property fair value gains.

However government rental arrears rose to K7.24 billion as of 31 December, 2025.

“Prospects for this year are on students accommodation which is becoming attractive in locations near public and private universities. However the developments are largely undertaken by small to medium investors”, said Sokosa.

According to the Mpico General Manager , the enactment of the 2024 Sectional Titles Act where a person owns a specific unit within a large building or development, together with a shared interest in common areas may boost the real estate sector by stimulating growth, maximizing land use and improving urban development as well as modernization.

On his part, one of the Shareholders Ekari Magola applauded MPICO for organizing such engagement.

“Honestly this engagement is an eye opener to me and urge the company to continue doing so,” said Magola.

He the urged the company increase its visibility.

Mpico is one of the country’s largest property holding company and is the subsidiary of Old Mutual Group.

Ten members of staff from Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited have qualified for the prestigious offshore trip administered by the parent company, Old Mutual Africa Regions, headquartered in South Africa.

The nine are travelling to China, specifically Beijing and Shanghai, on 6 June 2026 for an all-expenses-paid trip.

Of the 71 people who have qualified to travel with their partners to China, nine are from Malawi. “These topics, which centre on financial mindset change, savings and investment options, emergency and opportunity funds, retirement planning, budgeting, and debt management, are particularly critical given the current economic environment,” Chiluzi said.

“We aim to equip both soldiers and civilians with practical financial knowledge and skills to help them make informed financial decisions.”

In her remarks, Africa Global Logistics Human Resources Manager Catherine Makokola commended Old Mutual for the workshops, saying they come at a time when many people are facing significant financial challenges.

“There is a great need to empower people with knowledge on how to manage their finances, handle investments, and prepare for retirement. Without such knowledge, many people will continue to live under considerable financial stress,” she said.

Old Mutual Malawi has trained over 40 staff members from St Andrews International Primary School in Blantyre on how they can manage their finances amid economic challenges facing the country.

The training which was facilitated by Old Mutual Financial Education Manager Bernard Chiluzi focused much on the Big Five Secrets of money management. A lesson extracted from the behavioral characteristics of the big five animals in the jungle namely; Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino and Baffalo.

Citing an example of the behavior of a Leopard in the jungle, Chiluzi urged the staff members always to remain focus.

According to Chiluzi, the Leopard first spot the animal which is to hunt and all its energy and effort focuses on that and he urged the staff to emulate the same by clearly having an idea of what they are saving and investing for.

Speaking after the training Old Mutual Group IT Executive Gerald Mayamiko Chungu said the training was organized to help St Andrews staff prepare for the future.

“As you are aware the World we are living in is very unpredictable when it comes to economic landscape so we really need to have people who are well prepared for the future hence the training,” said Chungu while hinting on the need for staff members to start investing for the future.

“At Old Mutual we have various products that these staff can start investing on like Sogolo Savings Plan, Unit Trust, Alternative Investment and the returns are very significant and we believe after this training the staff members will pick one or two products,” he said.

On his part St Andrew’s International Primary School Head teacher Akif Naqvi hailed Old Mutual for the training.

“Honestly the training has been an eye opener for us and I believe the staff members from now onward they will start planning ahead,” he said.

After the training, the staff members were awarded with certificates.

One of the leading Insurance companies in the country, Old Mutual Malawi Limited has remitted MK50 billion in tax to Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) in the 2025 financial year.

The developments comes amid protests from business players plying business across the country who are protesting against the newly introduced Electronic Invoicing System introduced by MRA starting from April 1 2026.

This has resulted in some shop owners closing down shops across the country.

Speaking during the symbolic handover ceremony of the MK50 billion at Msonkho House in Blantyre Old Mutual Group Chief Executive Officer Tavona Biza said paying tax on time shows how the company is committed in investing in Malawi’s future.

“Today we officially came here to handover the MK50 billion in tax. This is our commitment to the communities where we operate, Commitment to nation-building as tax Funds essential services like schools, hospitals, roads, and infrastructure,” said Biza.

He then urged other companies and the citizenry to follow suit.

On his part Commissioner General Felix Tambulasi hailed Old Mutual for being a responsible company by remitting the tax on time.

Tambulasi then Malawians and some shop owners to follow suit.

“Closing shops in town will not distract us from enforcing tax compliance in the country,” said Tambulasi while commenting to the strike by some shop owners across the country over the newly introduced Electronic Invoicing System.

CDH Investment Bank continues to excel on the market posting a profit after tax of MK43. 221 billion in the year ending 31st December 2025 up from MK23.534 billion in the previous year, representing 84 percent growth.

The bank attributed the results to a 69% growth in operating income, with net interest income rising by 45% to K25.424 billion from K17.554 billion. Non-interest income also contributed positively, growing to K64.1billion.

Despite a 54% rise in operating expenses, the bank significantly improved its efficiency, reducing the cost-to-income ratio from 39% to 28% according to the published report

Total assets expanded markedly by 82%, reaching K974.234 billion from K536.766 billion in 2024. This balance sheet growth was underpinned by an 84% increase in customer deposits and an 83% rise in investment funds. Loans and advances also recorded healthy expansion demonstrating the bank’s support of private sector development.

Manda further explained that on Voluntary Pension arrangement, individuals can choose how much to contribute for retirement and the time frame.

He also said that up to 40 percent of the contribution can be accessed after 5 years of saving, while the remaining 60 percent is preserved for retirement benefits.

“This structure provides a balanced approach-offering both short-term access to funds and long-term retirement security,” he said.

Manda further explained that Programmed withdraw Pension is idea for members who are retiring and look for options on how to access their retirement money.

As one way of supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and improve market access for farmers in the country, Old Mutual (Blantyre) Foundation Trust has supported North East Foods Limited with money amounting to MK30 million.

This was revealed in Blantyre during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Old Mutual (Blantyre) Foundation Trust and GIZ, a German Agency working on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

Kettie Chisambi, Chief Executive Officer at North East Foods Limited said the support will help in procurement of the machine which will be used in processing feeds for fish and chickens from the Black Soldiers fly.

“The funds received will go a long way in procurement of machine which will be used in processing waste and final products which is livestock feed and we will also use the funds in training small holder farmers on how they can make their own black soldier flies.

As one way of ensuring that women are not left out when it comes to leadership roles within the company, Old Mutual Malawi has launched the Pink Potential Development Programme.

The 3 day training programe which is for female workers has brought together 33 female employees from various Business Units and focuses on leadership development, improved performance, and building confidence in the workplace.

Old Mutual Malawi Limited Board Chairperson Innocentia Ottober has described the recent appointment of Dr. George Partridge as Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor as a gain for the entire nation.

Ottober said this in Blantyre when Partridge and two other outgoing directors namely Bernadette Mandoloma, and Bridget Jumbe were bidding farewell to the company.

One of the leading micro-finance companies in the country, FINCA Malawi has donated MK7,825, 400 towards the Malawi National Spelling Bee’s team trip to Zimbabwe.

The funds will help 6 spellers both from Secondary and Primary schools in the country to travel to Zimbabwe to take part in the 2026 African Spelling Bee Competition set for 19 and 20 March 2026.

Spellers from 27 Countries are expected to take part in this year’s African Spelling Bee Competition.

Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited and Mzuzu University (MZUNI) have set 14 February as the date for preliminary examinations in the Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad, which will be written across the country.

Speaking in an interview, Associate Professor Khumbo Kumwenda, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation at Mzuni, said they have established eight examination centres spread across all three regions where the exams will be administered.

According to Kumwenda, the examinations will commence at 11:00 am, and all registered schools should intensively prepare their learners, as this presents an opportunity not only to prepare for national examinations but also to equip learners to become future problem-solvers.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Olympiad exposes learners to mathematical problems that effectively prepare them to handle national examinations while shaping them to become reliable citizens who can solve the challenges our country faces. Additionally, learners are inspired through exposure to the university environment, especially those who make it to the finals,” he said.

The Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad was resuscitated in 2015, and this year marks a significant milestone as Old Mutual celebrates 10 years of sponsoring the competition.

The prize presentation ceremony is scheduled for 2 March 2026 at Mzuzu University Campus.

CDH Investment Bank has pumped in MK3 million to the two-day Malawi Aquatic Union Southern Region swimming competition being held at St. Andrews International High School in Blantyre.

Speaking after the donation CDH investment Bank Risk and Compliance Officer Robert Malipa said swimming is one of the minority sports in the country which lacks sponsorship hence the move to promote it.

“We believe swimming can put Malawi on the map. Historically, it has lacked funding, so our contribution aims to elevate the sport to an international standard,” he said.

Malipa said the banks believe the sponsorship will help to increase the number of participants.

Mikwamba said “In 2024/2025 edition, we saw 237 students out of which, 113 girls and 124 boys, averaging 17 years of age participating from across the country. We are particularly encouraged by the growing participation of girls, evidenced by the fact that the highest score in Test 1 last year was achieved by a female student, with another female among the top two performers overall. And out of 122 schools, 48 were Community Day Secondary Schools, showing that the competition continues to reach students from diverse backgrounds.”

According to Mikwamba, the milestones that the competition has achieved, it has necessitated the business to increase the sponsorship competition from MK33 million to MK45 million.

The event started with a big walk from Old Mutual Head Office in Blantyre to KUHES. In the past 5 years, Old Mutual suspended the Family Day activity due to COVID-19.
