“The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) wishes to inform all peace-loving and law abiding Malawians and the general public that its planned demonstrations for tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, 2020 to demand the release of the leaders of Human Rights Defenders Coalition has been postponed. This is because we have been reliably informed that the court is due to deliver its decision on whether to grant the three activists bail tomorrow,” reads the statement.

The statement continued to say that they do no want to put the judiciary under pressure and also it is a sign of respect for and confidence in the judiciary.

“Our business has been hugely affected since August last year because of the demonstrations that HRDC has been staging in the name of championing human rights.

“Every time they organize demonstrations, we have people at Msundwe Trading Centre masquerading as demonstrators stoning at our buses, and our records now show that about 40 minibuses have had wind screens smashed out at Msundwe,” Vice Chairperson for the Association, Andy Mdala claimed.

He said in certain instances they have been forced to pay money to certain individuals in order to have clear passage at the Msundwe trading centre.

Mdala said the development has resulted in loss of revenue since they have been forced to use money collected from passengers on board to pay for their passage.

“The said demonstrators have in certain instances demanded cash as much as K 10 000 to grant us passage, and that affected our revenue since we make about k 20 000 per trip,” he said.

Mdala added that due to accumulative drop of revenue, some employers have opted to pull out their buses from the Mchinji-Lilongwe route, which he says has resulted in some drivers becoming jobless.

“In certain instances, we have had to use different routes like Nsalu. This has been costing us an extra Mk 5000 on fuel. As a result, some minibus owners have opted to pull out their buses and as I speak, some drivers are now jobless,” he said.

Efforts to talk to HRDC leadership proved futile as HRDC chairperson,

recommended his vice, Gift Trapence, who made reference to Billy Mayaya who has since not been responding to a questionnaire sent to him.

Head teacher for the school, Helbert Nsasa declined to comment on the matter, saying only his division could do that.

However, an inside source said things started a week ago when form 1 girls had been complaining about teasing and bullying at their hostels.

The source explained that the situation became worse when some girls started demanding K100 from each girl, failure to do which led to the form ones asked to kneel for over three hours.

“We managed to trace all those girls who were involved in such malpractice to these form 1 girls.

“We later interrogated them before asking all of them to invite their parents so that the school could take necessary action.

“After discussion with the parents, we agreed that there was need to suspend them, however, we were surprised to see them lingering in the campus,” said the source.

“All these girls are habitual offenders. The next thing we saw was girls and boys protesting against the suspension of their friends, through which they started destroying electricity equipment that feeds power to classes.

“They also chanted and sang songs before damaging a windscreen for a vehicle that was parked at the school matrons house,” he added, saying all this happened during the night.

The school managed to bring in police to bring peace but the learners locked the gate, disabling the law enforcers to access the school campus, so they went back to their station.

However, the source said the following evening the learners started stealing fresh maize from the school gardens and those belonging to teachers, luckily the teachers apprehended some of them.

But when the said learners were called the following morning for interrogation, it was discovered that there was a long list of offenders.

“The school was calling everybody whose name was mentioned which angered the students such that on Wednesday afternoon, all the boys refused to take lunch and that there was tension at the school.

“This prompted management to decide of closing down the school for fear of repetition of the Wednesdays situation,” the source said.

Meanwhile, management is scrutinizing names of those who should come or not. The source said some will be given a lengthy suspension while others are likely to be expelled.
