Talented makeup artist and self-described illusionist, Aurelio Sanchez, has been getting a lot of online attention for his ability to transform into celebrities like Mariah Carey or Shakira.

Aurelio Sanchez has always had a thing for impersonating people and film characters, but it wasn’t until one day, at age 18, when he acted out a character for his mom, that he knew that was what he wanted to do with his life. He went on to study makeup and used this newfound knowledge to fulfill his dream, turning himself into doppelgangers of celebrities like legendary Mexican singer, Selena, Oscar-nominated actress and singer, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, and many more.

A few years back, a client of Sanchez asked him to impersonate Mariah Carey, and the project turned out so well that the dive became one of his most popular characters, one that he has constantly tweaked over time, to the point where you now have to really pay attention that you are not in fact looking at the real Mariah Carey.

Sanchez has picked up a variety of makeup techniques and tricks over the years, which have allowed him to transform into all these celebrities. But despite his mastery of makeup, it still takes the young artist several hours to complete the illusion.

“I am always learning new techniques, methods, and product knowledge to further expand my creative process in bringing these illusions to life,” Sanchez told Allure Magazine. “I receive messages every day from beautiful, inspiring people who ask me to teach them what I do — one day soon I hope to do so and help keep the art of makeup and illusions alive through generations.”

Aurelio Sanchez is not the first makeup artist to use his talents to impersonate celebrities. A couple of years ago we featured, Elliot Joseph Rentz, aka Alexis Stone, an influencer from the UK, and then there was He Yuhong, a beauty blogger from China, and TikTok phenomenon, @gilianisme.

North Korea has reportedly banned people from wearing leather trench coats because dictatorial ruler Kim Jong-un doesn’t want his citizen dressing up like him.

First worn by Kim in 2019, the coat became popular among the North Korean elite who were keen to show their loyalty to the Supreme Leader and who could afford real leather.

But due to imitations of leather trench coats, fashion police have reportedly been deployed to shut down merchants selling them and take them off people amid fears it cheapens Kim’s look and undermines his authority.

‘[Police] say that wearing clothes designed to look like the Highest Dignity’s is an ‘impure trend to challenge the authority of the Highest Dignity,’ a source told Radio Free Asia, using a common honorific to refer to Kim.

‘They instructed the public not to wear leather coats, because it is part of the party’s directive to decide who can wear them.’

The outlet said knock-off versions of the coat first began appearing in September this year when unofficial trade between China and North Korea was reopened following a shut-down during the Covid pandemic.

That allowed traders to start acquiring synthetic leather to make the coats from.

Radio Free Asia claimed to have seen an import document from recent months that showed dozens of metres of the material being imported.

Kim first appeared in a leather coat in December 2019, around the time he was negotiating with Donald Trump over North Korea’s nuclear stockpile.

The styling was noted by South Korean media, which suggested it was indicative of Kim’s desire to break with tradition and forge his own identity. He had largely styled himself after his father and grandfather, the founder of North Korea by wearing Mao-style jackets and horn-rimmed glasses.

Designer Yuru Zhang recently won a design competition with a thin, card-like lipstick inspired by the way Chinese women applied lip makeup hundreds of years ago.

The humble lipstick tube feels like it has been around forever, doesn’t it? It hasn’t obviously, but it has become some widely adopted that it is basically the only way most of us visualize lipstick. Well, one designer wants that to change and he has come up with an ingenious design for lipstick that looks nothing like the good old tube Maurice Levi invented back in 1915. Instead, he has come up with a slick, card-like design inspired by the sheets of pigment-infused paper that Chinese women used to apply lip makeup centuries ago.

Called Yanzhi, after the red facial balm once used to do lip makeup in imperial China, the innovative lipstick has a rectangular design, and features a simple way to push the lipstick paper out. All the user has to do is push on the back of the container gently, and simply press their lips against the paper to apply the lipstick. After the makeup is done, the lipstick can be pulled back into the container.

“I got my inspiration from ancient Chinese lipstick. Yanzhi is the lipstick of ancient China. It has a very unusual way of making up. Women only need to sip it to make up. Our motivation is to make this ancient product more suitable for use in modern life,” Yuru Zhang said.

It’s unclear whether the Yanzhi lipstick will ever be commercially available, but even as a prototype, it’s a fresh take on a century-old invention in need of a refresh.

Mila Povoroznyuk, a young girl from the Ukrainian city of Vinnitsa, has shunned jeans, and all other modern clothing for the long dresses and intricate ensembles of the 19th century.

Nowadays, fashion trends change faster than ever before, but instead of trying to keep up, Mila Povoroznyuk decided to go back to a time that will never go out of fashion – the style of the late 19th century. For the past few years, she has replaced her fairly mundane wardrobe with vintage attires, including long dresses, corsets, all sorts of elegant hats and footwear from the late Victorian Era. Even though getting dressed every morning is much more of a hassle than it used to be, Mila says it’s worth it, as the vintage style makes her feel much more comfortable.

“First I started wearing a vintage blouse, then a skirt, and somehow such vintage clothing items gradually started filling up my closet,” Mila Povoroznyuk told Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda. “And I noticed that I increasingly chose them in everyday life, over my regular wardrobe. I felt more comfortable, more confident in such clothes, and now I practically dress like this every day.”

Mila has always been fascinated by vintage fashion, and 12 years ago she got into a historical reconstruction club whose members were passionate about medieval knightly combat. This gave her the chance to sew costumes for various festivals and battle reenactments, using all kinds of old engravings and paintings as a guide. This allowed her not only to study the history of fashion first-hand, but also learn how to sew all sorts of garments herself.

Mila Povoroznyuk’s vintage wardrobe currently numbers over 100 items, from various time periods, but most are inspired by the fashion of the late 18th century and early 19th century, a time when, according to the young Ukrainain, women looked “healthy and beautiful”, didn’t plaster their faces with layers upon layers of makeup. Even lipstick was only rarely used.

You would think that the most uncomfortable garment in Povoroznyuk’s wardrobe would have to be the corset, but even though she wears one every day, the young Ukrainian says it’s not hard to wear at all. That is partly thanks to the fact that it’s a custom-made corset designed for her particular frame, so it’s actually quite comfortable. At least it doesn’t come close to her long dresses, and her stockings. They get dirty very easily, so she always has to have a spare pair of white stockings with her, just in case.

Mila finds a lot of blouses and shoes in second-hand shops, and she sews the rest of the clothes herself, taking inspiration from old books. As for the accessories, she finds vintage items in personal collections of likeminded enthusiasts, and buys them from flea markets.

Mila Povoroznyuk has been dressing almost exclusively in vintage attires dating back to the 19th century for the last two years, and calls herself the “vintage lady”. She has been making sewing tutorials and photos of her vintage wardrobe online, and has built an impressive following on Instagram.

Makeup is an incredibly powerful tool in the right hands, and if you’re wondering just how powerful, this Japanese young man has been using it to cross the gender barrier and become a female cosplay idol.

Looking at the photos posted by @Makina_Jeanne, a popular cosplay enthusiast from Hokkaido, you could swear she was a young girl showcasing  her best assets in skimpy and tight outfits inspired by Japanese manga and anime, but in fact @Makina_Jeanne is a male who just happens to be fascinated by feminine cosplay. He uses makeup tricks, wigs and silicone breast prosthesis to make himself look like a girl, and most of the time, he does an amazing job.

@Makina_Jeanne has been doing cosplay for almost 9 years now, but not even his followers knew how the person behind the makeup actually looked like. At the start of 2020, on January 2nd, the popular cosplayer posted a picture of themselves back when they first started dressing up, and fans were shocked to see a nerdy-looking boy.

People started speculating about @Makina_Jeanne, with some assuming that he had undergone gender reassignment surgery, but the cosplayer laid all speculation to rest, explaining that he had never had any cosmetic procedures done, relying solely on makeup and accessories like wigs and silicone breast prosthesis.

@Makina_Jeanne’s revelation originally made news headlines in Brazil, of all places, but the cosplayer’s amazing transformation recently went viral in his home country as well, after he did an interview with Japanese magazine Oricon.

Asked how he got into feminine cosplay, the young man said that this was the first type of cosplay he ever saw, so he became fascinated by it. He was a junior in high-school when he saw seniors dressed as female characters for a festival, and he found it intriguing. He decided to try it himself, but his new hobby didn’t sit well with some of his fiends, who decided to cut ties with him.

Luckily, his mother gave him the strength to carry on and follow his dream. She told him “If you really want to cosplay as a girl, than you have to be the most beautiful one!” This really motivated him and made him work harder to improve his cosplay skills, and the results are quite visible in his photos.

@Makina_Jeanne said that his decision to upload photos of himself from eight years back was inspired by his need to show the world how far he has come, and also his desire to motivate other people like him, who are to afraid to follow their dream.

If you think @Makina_Jeanne’s story is a rare one, you are mistaken. Over the last couple of years we’ve featured several male cosplayers who mastered makeup to become popular feminine idols online. Rei Dunois, Japan’s “Cosplay Queen” is perhaps the most popular one we wrote about, but there was also Puutan, or Takuma Tani, as well as China’s popular CROME拉面猫就是星空萌. Do you still trust your eyes?

Photos of a man sporting a variety of rather unusual combinations of men’s and women’s clothes and footwear have been doing the rounds online and sparking debates about unisex clothing.

Italian high end brand Gucci recently made news headlines for releasing a dress for men that most people -both men and women – found unnecessary and even inappropriate. But, as it turns out, there are straight men out there who enjoy wearing women’s clothes and accessories, and actually look good doing it. Case in point, Mark Bryan a self-described “straight, happily married guy that loves Porsche’s , beautiful women, and incorporating high heels and skirts into my daily wardrobe”.

Photos of Mark have been doing the rounds on social media sites like Pinterest and Facebook for quite a while now, and recently went viral on Vietnamese social media as well, with many major news outlets picking up his pics as well. Most of them don’t even refer to him by name, calling him “European uncle” instead, even though I personally found no proof that he is from Europe.

All I’ve been able to find on Bryan was his Instagram bio (his account is private) and that he has a Pinterest account with about 1,200 followers. He regularly posts photos of himself sporting all kinds of combinations of skirts and high-heel shoes, sometimes combined with a men’s shirt, tie and jacket, and clearly has a more developed fashion sense than most men.

Does Mark dress this way every day, does he go to work or out shopping like this, or does he just put on his elegant attires for photos? I couldn’t tell, you, but you have to admit, he wears them skirts and high-heels better than a lot of women.

Mark isn’t the only man fond of clothing and footwear traditionally worn by women. A couple of year ago we featured Ashley Maxwell-Lam, a corporate banker who loved wearing high-heel shoes, as well Minnesota man Joe Quarion, who is trying to make unisex skirts popular again.

According to reports, a Nigerian medical practitioner identified as Abimbola Bamgbose has died after she allegedly went to Turkey for plastic surgery.

Friends and family of the late Abimbola took to Facebook to mourn her.

As people mourned her, some claims began circulating that she had gone for cosmetic surgery without the knowledge of her family.

Some claimed she lied to her husband that she was travelling for shopping, others said she went for surgery to look good for her 40th birthday.

The husband of the deceased also sent a message to Facebook users spreading lies about his wife.

He mentioned that the claims being made online about his deceased wife had no “ iota of truth” in them.

Two buddies in Mexico have come up with their own natural-yet-synthetic leather made of cactuses, and it honestly looks amazing.

Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez were able to create a breathable and partially biodegradable synthetic leather while sparing the environment from harm. And they called it Desserto.

And since the plant can survive all kinds of harsh temperatures, it made for the perfect choice for a fake leather material, and the two only pick the fully grown leaves without harming the cactuses themselves, harvesting them every 6 to 8 months.

During the creation of the cactus leather, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez cut the fully formed leaves and dry them in sunlight for three days.

This helps them reach the perfect level of humidity before they process the stuff with their special formula.

The cactus leather has now been used for making handbags, car seats, shoes, and other kinds of items, and there are plans to make it more readily available to smaller brands and manufacturers in order to help grow the industry of sustainable products.

In fact, since the two friends are now working hard to make the material widely available, it may not be too long until all of us can get our hands on some beautiful cactus leather items.
