Police in Lilongwe have arrested a foreign national suspected of being part of a cross-border stolen drugs syndicate.

The suspect, identified as Jasaphat Kamuda, was arrested on Tuesday after police discovered stolen medicines, HIV testing kits and malaria diagnostic kits at his residence in Falls Township.

According to investigators, the medical supplies are believed to have been stolen from public hospitals with the help of insiders within the health system.

Police say the drugs and testing materials were allegedly smuggled out of the country and sold illegally across borders.

A police spokesperson says investigators believe Kamuda was working with a wider network and that more arrests are expected as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has condemned the theft, describing it as a serious threat to patients who rely on free public healthcare services.

The ministry says it will seek a custodial sentence against those involved and is strengthening security and monitoring systems in health facilities to prevent further losses.

A Parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating the June 2024 military plane crash that killed former vice-president Saulos Chilima and eight others is today visiting the crash site at Nthungwa in Viphya Plantation.

The committee began its inquiry yesterday with a visit to Kamuzu International Airport where the Malawi Defence Force Dornier aircraft departed on June 10, 2024 en route to Mzuzu Airport before crashing in Viphya Plantation.

The delegation is being led by committee chairperson Walter Nyamilandu Manda, who together with other members was expected to arrive at the site later today.

Several top government and security officials have already arrived at the scene, including Secretary for Health Dan Namarika, Northern Region Police Commissioner Glinton Mitai, former Mzuzu Central Hospital Director General John Chipolombwe, as well as senior military officers.

The committee is expected to gather more information surrounding the circumstances of the tragic crash which claimed the lives of Chilima and eight others.

At least 45 students from Dowa Secondary School were on Monday evening rushed to Mponela Rural Hospital after experiencing vomiting and severe weakness following the administration of bilharzia medication.

Head teacher Saulos Mdalamba said the incident occurred after health personnel visited the school to administer praziquantel, a drug used to treat bilharzia.

According to Mdalamba, the affected students, comprising 24 girls and 21 boys, started vomiting shortly after taking the medication, while others became very weak.

He said all the students were taken to Mponela Rural Hospital for treatment, where they remain admitted.

Mdalamba added that the students are currently in stable condition, except for two boys who were still reported to be weak as of Tuesday morning.

Officials from the hospital were not immediately available to comment on the matter.

Police in South Africa have impounded a Malawian bus after allegedly finding it heavily overloaded during a trip to Johannesburg.

According to South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the bus was intercepted in Limpopo Province.

Reports indicate that although the bus is licensed to carry 70 passengers, it was allegedly transporting 90 people at the time it was stopped by police.

Authorities also discovered irregularities in the passenger manifest, with only 25 names reportedly appearing on the official list.

The driver of the bus reportedly fled the scene, while his assistant was found by police during the operation.

The incident comes amid rising tensions in South Africa, where some groups have recently staged protests over the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in the country.

Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Henry Chimunthu Banda, was last night involved in a road accident near Dedza Police Station.

The accident occurred when the vehicle in which Chimunthu Banda was travelling collided with a Toyota Sienta van that was carrying passengers.

A spokesperson for Dedza District Hospital confirmed that Chimunthu Banda sustained injuries during the accident and was rushed to Dedza Hospital for medical attention.

According to the hospital official, the former Speaker was later referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital for further treatment due to the nature of his injuries.

Officials at Kamuzu Central Hospital had not yet commented on the matter by the time of publishing. However, information gathered indicates that Chimunthu Banda is recovering well.

The condition of the passengers who were travelling in the Sienta van was not immediately known.

A 35-year-old man, identified as Chatanza Geoffrey from Livunzu Village under Traditional Authority Makhwira in Chikwawa District, has died following a road accident that occurred on Sunday at Nyaika Trading Centre.

According to Chikwawa Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Chancy Mfune Zare, the accident involved a vehicle that was travelling from Ngabu to Sorjin while carrying bags of beans and several passengers.

Mfune Zare said the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed upon reaching Nyaika Trading Centre, causing the vehicle to overturn.

“As a result of the accident, one passenger, identified as Chatanza Geoffrey, sustained severe injuries and died,” said Mfune Zare.

Six other passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated as outpatients at Ngabu Rural Hospital.

Police have since advised motorists to observe speed limits and avoid reckless driving in order to prevent road accidents.

Malawian artist Emmie Deebo has today released a new song titled Ngozi, marking his second release of 2026.

The track was produced by BFB, while the mixing and mastering was done by Richard Billy.

Speaking about the song’s message, which appears to talk about regretting knowing certain people, Deebo clarified that the lyrics are not directed at any specific individual.

The artist also addressed the unexpected release of the song, saying unlike previous projects that were heavily promoted before release, this time he wanted to surprise fans.

“I wanted to surprise people who love my music,” said Deebo.

Police in Mponela have arrested a 53-year-old woman, Aliste Adson, for allegedly having sexual relations with a 16-year-old boy.

Mponela Police Station Public Relations Officer, Macpatson Msadala, confirmed the development, stating that the incident took place on May 11, 2026.

According to Msadala, police launched an immediate investigation after receiving information regarding the matter, which led to the swift apprehension of the suspect.

Adson is currently being held in custody at Mponela Police Station, awaiting a court appearance where she is expected to be formally charged.

Msadala reminded the public that Malawian law strictly prohibits any adult from engaging in sexual acts with a minor under the age of 18.

“Such actions are heavily punishable under the law. This is a serious crime that severely compromises the future of the child,” Msadala stated.

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have urged parents, guardians, and the general public in the area of Mponela to tightly monitor their children.

The police have also advised community members to remain vigilant and promptly report any similar violations to the nearest police formation to ensure child protection.

The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Kasungu District has sentenced two men to seven years imprisonment each after they were found guilty of illegally possessing ivory weighing 15.50 kilograms.

The convicts, identified as Steven Nkhoma, 45, and Chimwemwe Manda, 25, were arrested on February 11, 2026 by rangers from Kasungu National Park while in possession of the ivory.

During court proceedings, State prosecutor Steven Majoni Phiri told the court that the two were apprehended during an operation conducted by wildlife authorities in the district.

Phiri asked the court to impose stiffer penalties, arguing that poaching and illegal hunting were increasingly becoming common in Kasungu District, resulting in huge losses of wildlife resources and government revenue.

Senior Resident Magistrate Sarah Mwangonde concurred with the State’s submissions and sentenced the two offenders to seven years imprisonment each.

Mwangonde said the sentence was meant to serve as a warning to other individuals involved in wildlife crimes and illegal hunting activities.

Kanengo Police Station has recovered 63 smartphones belonging to Yellow Company, following the arrest of a 36-year-old businessman, Jafali Jeke.

The suspect, a resident of Chinsapo 2, was arrested on May 5, 2026. A subsequent search of his house led detectives to recover assorted items, including 82 smartphones, two tablets, computer monitors, and other electronic equipment.

Investigations have since established that out of the 82 smartphones recovered, 63 have been positively identified as belonging to Yellow Company. The identification was carried out through the company’s Information and Technology Manager, Burhan Kenti.

According to Yellow Company, the 63 phones were sold on loan terms to 63 individual customers who had made partial payments before the phones were reported stolen. All 63 customers are residents of Lilongwe City.

The total value of the 63 recovered phones belonging to Yellow Company is MK54,580,500.00.

All recovered phones will be returned to their rightful owners on Friday, May 22, 2026. Affected individuals will be contacted directly to make arrangements for the collection of their phones.

Meanwhile, the suspect, Jafali Jeke, is expected to appear in court soon to face additional charges, including suspected fraud, upon completion of investigations.

Police in Mchinji have arrested two ex-convicts, Emmanuel Fatsani Phiri, 37, and Patrick Kapomba, 35, over a series of violent robberies and murders targeting trading centres in the district.

According to Mchinji Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Limbani Mpinganjira, the two were arrested in Lilongwe through a joint police intelligence operation.

They are suspected to have attacked an ADMARC security guard at Kalulu and stolen a Mark 2 rifle loaded with ammunition before robbing a Burundi national of K15 million and mobile phones on 1 May 2026.

Mpinganjira says the suspects are also linked to the murder of a trader at Chipumi Trading Centre on 13 May, where other traders were assaulted and robbed of cash and phones.

Police recovered a bullet linked to the stolen rifle and suspected stolen items during searches at the suspects’ homes, while efforts to arrest other suspects continue.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is set to leave Manchester United as a free agent at the end of the season following the expiry of his contract.

The departure brings an end to Casemiro’s four-year stay at Old Trafford, where he made more than 80 appearances and helped the club win the 2023 EFL Cup and the 2024 FA Cup.

In an emotional farewell message shared on Facebook, the former Real Madrid star thanked the club, the city of Manchester and supporters for the love shown to him and his family.

Lawyer George Jivason Kadzipatike says he has received reports that the Malawi Police Service is planning to arrest former president Lazarus Chakwera following the Kamuzu Day procession held in Lilongwe on May 14, 2026.

Kadzipatike, who is also legal director for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), said the alleged planned arrest is linked to Chakwera’s walk from MCP headquarters to lay a wreath at the mausoleum of Malawi’s founding president, Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

“If these reports are true, then it is very unfortunate, considering that the wreath-laying ceremony was duly authorized by the relevant Government officer,” Kadzipatike said.

He argued that Chakwera had every right to access the mausoleum by any means of transport or movement since the event had allegedly been authorized.

Kadzipatike further accused police of provoking “innocent, peaceful, unarmed and law-abiding citizens” who took part in the procession.

The lawyer has since warned police against what he described as continued provocation of MCP supporters.

“Planning to arrest the former President on the ground that he was going to a duly authorized event is not only laughable but also indicative of lack of seriousness on the part of the police,” he added.

The Malawi Police Service has not yet commented on the claims.

A 24-year-old woman from Libuyu Compound has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a taxi driver after pretending she needed transport to hospital for medical treatment.

The victim, Patrick Mulenga, 50, of Highlands Township, sustained a deep cut to the head, stab wounds on the ribs and injuries to his hand during the attack.

According to Moono Namalongo, Southern Province Police Commissioner, the incident happened around 07:00 hours on May 14, 2026.Police say Mulenga received a phone call from a woman requesting to be picked up from Highlands Township and taken to hospital.

Upon arrival, he reportedly found a man and a woman whose face was covered, and drove them to the hospital.However, after reaching the hospital, the woman  later identified as allegedly claimed she had forgotten money at home, prompting them to return to Highlands Township.

When they arrived at a locked house, Mwansa allegedly asked the driver to help open the door. While assisting, Mulenga was suddenly attacked with a sharp object.

Police say the woman stabbed him multiple times using a knife before the victim managed to remove her face covering and recognised her as someone known to him.

The male suspect who had accompanied the woman fled the scene and remains at large. Despite his injuries, Mulenga managed to apprehend Mwansa and took her to police.

The victim is currently admitted to Livingstone Teaching Hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition. Police have since recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack and investigations are continuing.
