Police in Mchinji have arrested a 29 year old Mozambican national identified as  Mathews Marcos Jesitene,  for being in possession of fake Mozambican currency amounting 36,000  meticais which he wanted to exchange it Malawi kwacha.

According to District Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira, Jesiten was arrested on Tuesday at Mchinji Boma tax park after being informed by sone well wishers.

He said the police has already taken the money and soon he will appear in court.

Jesitene hails from Ndeketaya village, under chief Ngweya in Chifunde district in Mozambique.

In America, North Carolina, a 16-year-old Sean Simpson has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder for the alleged shooting of his peer, Zaquavious “Tank” Dawkins, also 16.

The incident occurred on January 26, 2025, when Dawkins was reportedly on his way to a store to purchase items for his disabled mother. Witnesses claim that Simpson fired from a vehicle, fatally wounding Dawkins.

During his court appearance, Simpson became visibly emotional upon learning he would be tried as an adult. He was denied bail and appointed a capital defender. As officers escorted him out, he was heard exclaiming, “I love you, Mama!”

This case is among the first to be prosecuted under North Carolina’s revised “Raise the Age” law, effective December 1, 2024, which permits 16 and 17-year-olds to be tried as adults for serious felonies, including murder.

The community mourns the loss of Dawkins, described by family members as a “sweet” and “kind” individual. His aunt, Denise Wilson, expressed the family’s heartbreak over his untimely death.

Simpson’s next court date has not been announced, and the case continues to unfold as both families and the community grapple with the tragedy.

Unidentified attackers have killed Abel Chiumia, an 18-year-old motorcycle taxi operator, in Mzuzu.

Mzuzu Police Deputy Spokesperson Sergeant Cecilia Mfune confirmed the incident, explaining that Chiumia was hired by three individuals from Chigwere rank in the city.

They requested to be taken to Sonda, but he never returned.

Chiumia’s father reported his son missing, prompting a police search. His body was later discovered in a remote area with head and facial injuries, indicating foul play.

Police are actively investigating the incident and working to apprehend those responsible.

The late Chiumia hailed from Liomba Village, under Traditional Authority Nyaluhanga in Nkhatabay District.

Police in Lilongwe have arrested Ellina Mwanguku, a 24-year-old manager at Premier Bet’s Six Miles branch, on allegations of misusing K3 million from the company to play the betting game Aviator.

According to Deputy Police Spokesperson Constable Khumbo Sanyiwa, the incident occurred on Saturday when Mwanguku allegedly began using company funds to bet on the game, hoping to generate profits. The misuse came to light during the company’s routine financial reconciliation.

“Upon investigation, it was discovered that Mwanguku had placed stakes as high as K1 million using her phone,” said Constable Sanyiwa.

The suspect, who hails from Misuku Village under Traditional Authority Mwenemisuku in Chitipa District, is in custody and will appear in court to answer charges related to the embezzlement of company fund.

Police in Mulanje are searching for 46-year-old Kingsley Bandazi, suspected of illegally storing a firearm at his senior wife’s home.

According to Mulanje Police spokesperson Innocent Moses, Bandazi recently returned to Malawi from South Africa, where he resides.

Moses stated that law enforcement acted on a tip-off from community members, who alleged that Bandazi was involved in selling firearms and ammunition.

Upon raiding his home, police did not find Bandazi, who was reportedly at his junior wife’s residence at the time.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the suspect and uncover the extent of his activities

The Lusaka Regional Immigration Office in Zambia, have apprehended 35 foreign nationals on November 26, 2024, for various immigration offences. Among them, a Zambian national was arrested for obstructing officers during the operation.

The crackdown, which began at 6:00 AM, targeted areas such as Misisi, Chunga, SOS, Lilanda, Middle West, and Makeni South. Those detained include 26 Burundians, five Rwandese, four Congolese, and one Tanzanian.

Immigrations Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka revealed that many of the suspects were caught at bakeries where they were purchasing bread for resale. The Zambian national reportedly alerted suspects to the officers’ presence, enabling some to escape.

All detainees are being held at Kamwala Remand Correction Facility pending court appearances. This operation contributes to the nationwide total of 96 arrests for immigration-related offences between November 25 and 26, 2024.

Police in Chadiza District, Eastern Province in Zambia,have arrested a couple for allegedly whipping a 4-year-old child to death after the child soiled himself.

According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, the incident occurred on 24th November 2024, when the couple, who had been married for four months, went to the forest to cut trees for charcoal production.

While they were there, the child soiled himself, which angered the stepfather, Daniel Banda (25).

Mr. Banda reportedly used a whip with thorns to beat the child, who became unconscious as a result.

Later in the night, the couple decided to take the child to the hospital, but the child was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Chilenje Police Station in Zambia is investigating a case involving the theft of a three-month-old baby boy, reported on November 26, 2024. The incident occurred a day earlier, on November 25, in the Shantumbu area.

The suspect, identified as Grace Banda (22) of Shantumbu, allegedly took the child from his mother, Inness Siameba (24), under false pretenses.

According to the police, the suspect encountered the victim’s mother and father, Choolwe Mweetwa (30), at Shantumbu Market. Banda introduced herself as a neighbor and offered to help carry the baby, claiming she was heading in the same direction. Upon reaching the complainant’s residence, the suspect excused herself, saying she needed to fetch her brazier to borrow fire but never returned.
Concerned, Siameba went to the suspect’s purported residence but did not find her. Alarmed, she alerted the community, who initiated a search.

At approximately 8:30 PM, Banda was discovered at her landlord’s house holding the baby, now dressed in new clothes.

When confronted, she claimed the baby was hers. Siameba, however, demanded she breastfeed the child to prove her claim. Banda failed to do so, and Siameba successfully breastfed the baby, confirming his identity.

Community members apprehended the suspect and handed her over to the police. A case docket has been opened, and investigations are ongoing.

Police have commended the public for their swift response and assistance in ensuring the safe recovery of the baby. They also urged parents and guardians to exercise caution and remain vigilant, especially in public spaces.

A 41-year-old woman from Lusaka’s Chibolya area has been sentenced to 18 years in prison with hard labor after being found guilty of an offense involving a nine-year-old boy.

The sentence was delivered by Lusaka High Court Judge Bridget Maka, following a ruling by a lower court. The court determined that Martha Sampa committed the offense on three occasions, offering K10 in exchange.

Judge Maka stated that Sampa would serve the 18-year term from the date of her arrest on December 7, 2022, and issued an order for her transfer to a correctional center in Lusaka.

This case underscores the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring justice in such matters.

Five juvenile offenders between the ages of 15 and 18 years have escaped from Singogo correctional facility in Ndola district in Zambia.

The escapees, who were facing charges of defilement, murder, and housebreaking, managed to break out by removing pan bricks from the wall using a toothbrush and two cut iron angle bars.

According to Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba, the escape occurred between 17:30 on November 13, 2024, and 02:20 am on November 14, 2024.

Commissioner Mweemba revealed that remaining inmates reported being threatened by the escapees to prevent them from alerting officers.

A note left behind by the escapees read: “PLEASE FORGIVE US, WE ARE TIRED OF WAITING FOR THE SESSION.”

Police have launched an investigation, with the scene processed and evidence collected, including the toothbrush and iron angle bars used in the escape.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could lead to the recapture of the escapees.

Former Malawian leaders Bakili Muluzi, Joyce Banda, and Peter Mutharika have called on Inspector General of Police Merlyne Yolamu to investigate and arrest individuals involved in violence and suppression of opposition protests in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

The ex-presidents emphasized that Malawians must be allowed to hold peaceful demonstrations and choose their leaders without fear or intimidation.

In their statement, they noted that identifying the perpetrators should be straightforward as video evidence capturing their faces is available.

The former leaders also urged President Lazarus Chakwera and his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to condemn the incidents and assure citizens that such actions will not occur again.

Their letter also called on the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to address underlying issues fueling the unrest.

“MEC must reassess its partnership with Smartmatic and resolve the challenges preventing Malawians from registering to vote due to NRB’s failure to issue national IDs,” they wrote.

“The time to act is now. This is how democracy is preserved,” the leaders added.

President Chakwera has not yet commented on the matter, while MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila challenged opposition parties to provide evidence linking the violent acts to MCP members.

African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) in Arusha, Tanzania has today ruled that Misozi Chanthunya’s sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his partner, Linda Gasa, will remain the same as his appeal has been dismissed.

Chanthunya had petitioned for release and requested an apology from the Malawian government, claiming his rights were violated and his trial was unfair.

However, in a ruling delivered today by a panel of eleven judges in Tanzania, the court found that Malawi had acted lawfully and did not violate Chanthunya’s rights.

According to a statement from Malawi’s Ministry of Justice, the court upheld the previous conviction, which had sentenced Chanthunya to life in prison in 2020 for the murder of Gasa, a Zimbabwean national, in 2010.

Chanthunya will continue to serve his sentence at Zomba Prison as per the court’s verdict.

Police In Lusaka,Zambia police have arrested 22-year-old Ernest Zibonile from Kabanana Compound, linked to a cross-border cybercrime syndicate targeting WhatsApp accounts.

The arrest was part of a joint operation by the Cybersecurity Task Force and the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA).

Zibonile, a member of the so-called “Gen Z delinquents,” admitted to helping hackers from Nigeria and Kenya. The scheme involved hijacking WhatsApp accounts and then using these accounts to extort money from the victims’ contacts.

Once the funds were collected, Zibonile would withdraw the money using Zambian mobile numbers, ensuring anonymity through pre-registered SIM cards and rapid transfers. He earned a 15 percent commission per transaction.

The case gained traction after 19-year-old Lusaka resident Joyce Mwanza reported losing access to her WhatsApp account. She explained that a man, using a foreign accent and posing as a local, invited her to an online meeting.

During the conversation, she was asked to read back a four-digit code, which resulted in the immediate hijacking of her account. Following this, her contacts were solicited for loans, amounting to approximately K22,000.

Authorities identified social engineering tactics as the primary method the hackers used to deceive victims, often involving fake calls and Zoom meeting invitations. By tracking digital clues, investigators located Zibonile’s base in Kabanana, leading to his arrest.

Law enforcement officials urge the public to be vigilant against online scams and verify requests before sending money to prevent falling victim to such schemes.
