United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has broken his silence on the 2019 general elections, describing the poll as “one of the most contentious in Malawi’s history” and claiming it was “stolen” through serious irregularities and manipulation.

In a strongly worded Facebook post titled “Let’s Set the Record Straight,” Muluzi said the country must not forget the past but must also be bold about its future. He accused the electoral system of erasing his support:

“You gave me your trust; but the system gave me just 200,000 votes and tippexed me out of my own constituency.”

Despite the setback, Muluzi said he chose peace over protest when the courts nullified the results, opting instead to join forces with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as a running mate in the 2020 Fresh Presidential Election.

He emphasized that the 1.7 million votes secured by the DPP-UDF ticket were not by chance: “That wasn’t luck. That was work, sacrifice, and leadership; grounded in love for Malawi.”

Muluzi further clarified that his message was not about politics, but about truth, accountability, and a call for honest leadership:

“This is about restoring dignity to our democratic processes… and what Malawi deserves: leaders who earn trust and deliver results through action, not noise.”

Meanwhile, Muluzi’s post comes at a time when rumours are swirling about his possible alliance with the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ahead of the 2025 general elections.

He has been frequently seen alongside President Lazarus Chakwera at public functions  sparking speculation that the UDF leader may be preparing to partner with the MCP.

A 14-year-old Grade 8 pupil at Namwala Central Secondary School in Zambia who was reported missing by her grandmother on May 31, 2024, has turned up, revealing that she was at her boyfriend’s house.

And following her return, the grandmother reported the alleged boyfriend only identified as Musa, to Police for defilement on June 4, 2024.

The two are said to have been in a relationship for a while, with the boyfriend accused of buying and giving beer to the girl.

The girl had been reported missing both at School and at the Police, hence when she showed up at the former, the Head-teacher informed her grandmother, who then went to get her and took her to the Police.

It was there where she opened up that she was with the boyfriend all the days she went missing.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, indicated that no arrest had been made yet, while a Medical Report Form was issued to the girl, with a docket opened.

At least five people have died and dozens more are believed to be trapped under rubble after a multi-storey apartment building under construction in South Africa collapsed.

Officials in the city of George, on the country’s southern coast, say 49 people are still trapped while 21 have been taken to various hospitals, at least 11 of them having suffered severe injuries.

More than 100 emergency staff and other responders have worked through the night using sniffer dogs and tall spotlights to try to locate workers buried in the mangled wreckage for more than 12 hours.

Rescuers have been working in three teams at separate sites around the collapsed building where they believed construction workers were likely to be.

It’s feared some are under huge slabs of concrete that fell on them when the five-storey building fell on Monday afternoon, local time, in the city, around 250 miles (400km) east of Cape Town.

Large cranes and other heavy lifting equipment have been brought in to remove debris.

Rescuers made contact with 11 workers trapped in the rubble and were hopeful of bringing them out, Colin Deiner, the chief director of the provincial Western Cape Disaster Management and Fire and Rescue Services, said.

Mr Denier said some of them were talking to rescuers but couldn’t move because they had limbs trapped under concrete.

He said: “It’s a very tough operation. There’s a lot of concrete… so we think it will still take quite a while. The search operation will continue all day. We’ve got a lot of people on the scene but it’s really, really hard work.

“So many people trapped in a building like that is like searching for a needle in a haystack. You literally have to break through the concrete and cut through the reinforcing.”

Western Cape premier Alan Winde, the head of the provincial government, who was at the scene, said: “Seventy-five members of construction crew have been confirmed on site at that time of the incident.

“All the necessary support has been offered to emergency personnel to expedite their response. At the moment, officials are focused on saving lives. This is our top priority at this stage.”

The national government was being briefed on the rescue operation, Mr Winde said.

CCTV footage recorded at 2.09pm obtained by Reuters showed a cloud of dust over the neighborhood as the building’s concrete structure and the metal scaffolding around it came crashing down.

People came streaming out of other buildings after the collapse, some screaming and shouting.

Pictures from a drone camera showed a completely flattened construction site, with parts of the building’s roof lying on top of the rubble.

As family and friends of the workers gathered at nearby municipal offices, George’s executive mayor Leon Van Wyk said: “Our thoughts are with the families and all those affected who continue to wait on word of their loved ones.

The Zambia Police Service has refuted claims circulating in the media that a mental patient was killed by a Trainee Nurse at Lusaka’s Levy Mwanawasa Hospital.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, states that a thorough investigation by the Service has established that no such incident occurred at the said medical facility.

Hamoonga has acknowledged the importance of accurate reporting and the need to address public concerns promptly, hence urging the public and media outlets to verify information before dissemination.

A sleepover has turned tragic for a 26-year-old woman of Lusaka, who lost her life after allegedly being electrocuted

The victim who has only identfied as Catherine, is believed to have gone to stay over at her boyfriend John Banda’s house in Mazabuka.

While there, she allegedly touched an extended cable and was electrocuted.

The victim was discovered by the boyfriend’s friend, who owns the house, and the matter was reported to the police.

Police have launched investigations into the incident and are searching for the victim’s boyfriend, whom they need to question.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka, who confirmed the incident, said it occurred on Wednesday, April 17th, around 22:10 hours.

He said the incident was reported by Christopher Lubasi, a housemate of the victim’s boyfriend.

“The reporter reported that Catherine, aged 26, of Kaleya Station, believed to be from Lusaka, was electrocuted by electricity.

This was after the deceased touched an extended cable, which was connected from the one-way socket to the adapter, using her left hand.

Physical injuries were seen on the left hand fingers, with some skin coming out due to burns, and no other physical injuries were seen on the body,” he said.

Mr Daka said the deceased is believed to have been staying at her boyfriend’s house, John Banda, believed to be around 20 years old and a herbalist who is currently at large.

He said the reporter had left home around 10:00 hours for his personal business and returned around 21:00 hours to discover the deceased in his house.

The headline’s goal is to entice the reader to read the first sentence. Every headline should be attention-grabbing. Simply said, “attention” refers to serious concentration and mental focus on a certain subject.

Remember that your consumers are people and that every day, thousands of advertisements, blogs, stories, and other things compete for their attention.

Social media has been flooded with a video clip of two girls who went topless and fight while their friends were watching.

The teenagers exchanged blows after they had refused to seize fire despite several attempts by people nearby to separate them.

The two were left to dirty themselves while bystanders believed to be their neighbours acted as spectators to enjoy the show.

The irate ladies were made to take off their tops exposing the upper part of their respective bodies before the brawl could be called to order.
