Tyler Robinson, 22, made his first court appearance virtually on September 16 after being arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10.

He appeared via video in a Utah County courtroom, showing little emotion as Fourth District Court Judge Tony Graf Jr. read the charges against him.

Robinson only spoke to confirm his name and appeared to nod when told he would remain in jail without bail. He has not yet been assigned legal representation.

Prosecutors from the Utah County Attorney’s Office announced that Robinson is charged with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and other related offenses.

They also confirmed plans to seek the death penalty in the case. Judge Graf issued a protective order for Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, prohibiting Robinson from contacting her.

Violating the order could result in additional charges.

Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo has resigned as United Transformation (UTM) spokesperson and member of the party.

This is according to a letter dated November 22, 2022 signed by Mwenifumbo himself addressed to UTM’s Secretary General Patricia Kaliati.

According to Mwenifumbo, on October 13, 2022, he sought the audience with the party’s President Saulos Chilima who is also the country’s vice president at his private office in Area 43 to tender his resignation.

He added that after giving out his reasons for resigning from the part and his position, Chilima received his resignation graciously.

Explaining why he delayed announcing the resignation, Mwenifumbo said the illness of Chilima’s wife Mary, held him back.

Mwenifumbo said that he wants to focus on his personal business and farming at his home village.

He however, has said that he has no intentions of joining any political party.

Mwenifumbo succeeded Joseph Chidanti Malunga in 2020.

Just after two weeks of their apparent fallout, President Lazarus Chakwera and his vice Saulos Chilima met and discussed way forward of how the Tonse Alliance will work together in the interest of Malawians.

According to a joint statement the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) released signed by the parties’ spokesperson Reverend Maurice Munthali and Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo, said the alliance partners have resolved to put their differences aside and work together to strengthen their working relationship as partners.

According to the statement, the agreement was made yesterday during a meeting between the two leaders Chakwera and Chilima in the capacity as leaders of their parties, they were also accompanied by some top officials from their respective parties.

Two weeks ago, president Chakwera withdrew delegated powers of his vice after his name was mentioned in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) report form allegedly being involved in corrupt activities with UK-based businessman Zuneth Sattar.

According to Chakwera, the decision was to pave way for investigations by the bureau, on his part Chilima vehemently denied being involved in any corrupt dealings with the businessman but opened his doors for investigations.

In his national address as the country’s vice president Chilima accused his boss of betraying the alliance’s agreement in which he said it is bordering on presidency rotation he went further revealing some of the agreement they made in 2020 prior to the June 23 fresh presidential elections.

However, Chilima’s sentiments were quashed by MCP’s leadership in which the party’s secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka refuted claims that the said document exists.

Mkaka went further adding that in the next presidential elections, they will follow what the country’s supreme laws say. This caused panic in the alliance hence its leaders resorted to meet and talk over the issue.

However, it is not known if the leaders have agreed to go by the agreement in the next presidential elections or not.

United Transformation Movement (UTM) Blantyre Urban Governor Charles Mkoloma has apologized to Malawians for being part of Tonse Alliance which has failed to deliver what it promised to Malawians before being ushered into power.

Mkoloma said this in a letter directed to the Party’s Secretary General dated February 3, 2022 as he announced that he has resigned from both his position and the party.

“It is with heavy heart that today I lender my resignation as Blantyre Urban District Governor. Be also advised that I forthwith exit from the party as a member,” he said.

“I exit with a heavy heart because of the sacrifices I made for the party, wooing supporters to vote for Tonse Alliance but in turn, the same choice they made has caused them unfold misery,” Mkoloma said in his letter.

He further said he apologize to all Malawians for being part of the team that promised them the moon only to let them plough their own field.

He has then endorsed the concerned citizen’s demonstrations being undertaken across the country led by Hon Bon Kalindo.

In the letter, he passed a message to his fellow district members that “Ndaliwona dzanja likulemba Nkhoma hence my decision.”

He then told the party leadership that God is seeing and the same people they have abandoned today shall hurt them in 2025 elections.

Ayiles Tambala, the woman who was seriously burnt as she showed rare bravado in plucking her five children from a raging fire that trapped her six-member family in a midnight petrol bomb attack on a UTM office in Lilongwe on Monday night, has died from her burns early this Thursday.

Government has asked United Transformation Movement (UTM) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to cancel their coronavirus sensitization tours, saying it is the responsibility of health personnel.

In a press statement seen by Face of Malawi reporter, Minister of information Mark Botomani said it is inappropriate for UTM and MCP to involve themselves in coronavirus message development and dissemination without any orientation by the Ministry of Health.

“Incorrect information is a setback to the fight against coronavirus. In addition, even correct information developed and disseminated wrongly, is a danger as well.

“Government would like to ask UTM and MCP to cancel their coronavirus sensitization tours and allow the Ministry of Health officials to take lead,” said Botomani.

In the statement, Botomani added that UTM and MCP, must never use coronavirus for political gains arguing that People’s lives are at risk and, for once, parties should leave politics aside and think Malawi first.

The statement further urged all political parties in the country considering involving themselves in the fight against Covid-19 to contact the Ministry of Health for guidance.

“Government expects UTM, MCP and indeed any other party with similar ideas to adhere to this call by seeking guidance from Ministry of Health.

Malawians are reminded that Covid-19 is a serious and divesting pandemic which has affected the whole world. The law enforcement agencies will, therefore, deal with anyone who will disregard the orders as outlined by His Excellency the State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in his national address on COVID-19 last week.”

Government has however asked Malawians to act responsibly in managing this pandemic even though the country has not yet registered any case.

United Transformation Movement (UTM) has cautioned government to stop targeting other party members in advancing propaganda saying doing so is undemocratic.

UTM regional governor for the north Leonard Njikho made the remarks on Wednesday in reference to a rally the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) organized in Tukombo, Nkhata-bay south where UTM councilor was invited.

“The honorable who was conducting his DPP meetings in Nkhata-bay is fond of inviting our councilors and other political leaders from our parties, just to coax them and I want to say that he will not achieve anything because people have made their minds he should stop doing such behavior,” said Njikho.

In his own words the Tukombo ward councilor Akland Chenya said he was tricked to believe he was being invited to a development rally when actually it was a party rally causing others to assume he has dumped UTM.

“They want to gain popularity in Nkhata-bay south especially in my ward because they are the ones who invited me,” said Chenya.

Meanwhile the DPP regional governor Kenneth Sanga has denied the allegations saying they are not true.

“Do we invite people to a rally? We don’t invite them, they come on their own. People can choose whether to come to a rally or not,” said Sanga.

Ironically Chenya has appeared twice on DPP rallies.

A political analyst from the University of Livingstonia, George Phiri, has advised the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to wait for the court outcome of the electoral case before holding by-election in Lilongwe south.

MEC is set to hold a parliamentary by-election in Lilongwe South Constituency on November 5, which were postponed following the death of UTM candidate, Agnes Penemulungu, in the run up to the May 21 tripartite elections.

Phiri was commenting following a stand by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM who are rejecting the planned by-elections by the electoral body on grounds of mutual trust.

“The decision by the political parties is a welcome move because of the issues of integrity since the same MEC was responsible for the May 21 elections that are currently being contested in court.” Phiri said

Phiri further said if the two major political parties will not be part of the elections then there is no need for the electoral body to conduct the election.

MCP Secretary General, Eisenhower Mkaka and UTM Publicist, Chidanti Malaunga, both told the media that MEC should consider not holding the by-election until the presidential results case is concluded.

MCP and UTM leaders are challenging the results of May 21 presidential elections claiming that they were rigged in favour of President Peter Mutharika who was declared winner.

UTM Parliamentary candidate for Lilongwe South Constituency, Agnes Penemulungu, died on April 29, three weeks to the May 21 election.

President for the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, is today start testifying in support of his application a case in which MCP and UTM parties are disputing the outcome of the May 21 Presidential election.

Chakwera who is the second petitioner in the case will be responding to lawyers for the first respondent, President Peter Mutharika and the second respondent, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on issues that are in his sown statements.

Chakwera’s appearance comes after the first petitioner, Dr. Saulosi Chilima, and his three witnesses finished giving their evidence in the same court.

On September 12, UTM lawyer, Chikosa Silungwe, announced that his side had decided to parade only four witnesses instead of the expected 38, citing that they want to expedite the case.

The four include Saulos Chilima, Mirriam Gwalidi, Darlington Ndasauka and Bright Kawaga who testified that no originals but rather duplicates, fake sheets and a correction fluid branded tippex were used in the elections and that in some instances presiding officers did not sign for results sheets or log books.

Lawyers for Chakwera are expected to parade 19 witnesses to prove their case.

On the other hand president Mutharika’s lawyers have said that they will parade 42 witnesses.

MCP and UTM parties are contesting that Mutharika won a fraudulent election citing the use of tippex, fake results sheets, intimidation of party monitors, among other irregularities.

UTM on Sunday celebratared its first anniversary at a ceremony held at the Old bus depot in Ntcheu with a resounding message to it’s members to expect ‘a new game plan’.

The party’s president Saulos Klaus Chilima came third in the May 21 election but looking resolute said they (UTM) are the only ones who will turn Malawi around.

Chilima did not eleborate his plans but said everyone will be privy to know because they do not hide their intentions.

“The second year has new things, we are bringing a new game plan. Let’s  be attentive to what we will do,” Chilima told the crowd gathered.

He said Malawi is an example of poverty and said as a party their work is not done till the message they set out pre-election at Masintha ground in Lilongwe is delivered.

Chilima blamed President Peter Mutharika for not delivering on corruption citing the 37 billion tractor gate which government has come out to apologise for.

The rally again turned into a campaign meeting as he reminded the people of his plan is to sell fertiliser, the most sought after commodity in the agriculture reliant nation for about K4,000 and not the current K30,000.

He also took a jab at his former boss Mutharika over the recent load shedding which is at six hours asking sarcastically where the much publicised generators government purchased last year are and why they are not being used now adding next it will be fuel shortages.

“All that is needed is the thieves to quit. There is a lot of money to go around amoung us,” Chilima said.

Again chiming in on the on-going Jane Ansah demonstrations Chilima said he will be in Blantyre on Tuesday to take part in the procession.

He asked supporters to take action and not sit on the sideline while things while things happen.

In his speech he did ask his fellow demonstrators not to destroy things saying they will have a huge task to redevelop such infrastructure.

“If it’s everyday demonstrations, let us go do it, don’t blame anyone, let’s go to the streets till things change,”

Chilima left the people with a take message of home saying: “We are here and we will achieve what we set out for the next generations.”

Protesters in Blantyre have gathered at Kamuzu Upper Stadium for demonstrations organised by Human Rights Defenders Forum (HRDC) pushing for the removal of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah.

UTM vice-president Michael Usi and patron Noel Masangwi have arrived at the upper stadium.

Also in attendance is Malawi Congress Party (MCP) campaign director Moses Kunkuyu.

UTM Party president Saulos Chilima has urged his followers to join this week’s vigils against embattled Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah.

Some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the banner of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) have planned to hold vigils on 4th and 5th July to force Ansah to resign for allegedly failing to manage the May 21 presidential poll.

Speaking during a thank you political rally at Mponda Ground in Zomba on Saturday, the former Malawi vice president said the demonstrations will be held until justice is served on the disputed May 21 presidential election results.

Chilima assured his supporters not to fear arrests during the demonstrations as the Malawi Police Service will be there to protect them.

He however urged his supporters to observe peace during the demonstrations.

The UTM leader appealed to his supporters to wait patiently for the outcome of the election case at the Constitutional in which the two are claiming that the election was rigged.

Chilima has also appealed to UTM party supporters to rally behind the party and its dreams of developing the country and ending corruption.

He therefore declared 21st of every month as UTM day starting from July 21 this year saying on this day UTM supporters will be holding a number of celebrations.

Also speaking during the thanks giving political rally, UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati said the party is here to stay.

Kaliati questioned the rising prices of basic necessities such as bread and electricity as well as plans to hike passport fees.

This was the third thank you rally for UTM party after holding similar rallies in Mzuzu and Lilongwe.

Chilima is challenging the May 21 presidential election results at the Constitutional Court together with his counterpart, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera.

LILONGWE – President Peter Mutharika has accused opposition political leaders of attempting to use mercenary militias from Al-Shabaab and the Congo war zone to create anarchy in Malawi.

The Malawi president was speaking in Parliament when he delivered the State of the Nation address.

“I know two political leaders who discussed the possibility of exploding Kamuzu Stadium on the day of my swearing in. They must know that I know. These two political leaders have tried to recruit mercenary militias from Al-Shabaab and the Congo war zone to come and create anarchy in this country. Is this the leadership we want?” he said.

“My appeal to govt is that they should only tell the president HE Peter Muthatika the truth. The issue of DRC and Al-Shabab on my mind wrong Intel. Let the president know that the All-Shabab is a very serious terrorist organisation and mentioning them when they have nothing to do with Malawi it might be a provocation of highest order to this grouping. They are able to go wherever they want at anytime and carry out their operation and leave and announce their involvement. This will definitely make headlines in international media hopefully All-Shabab will respond.” One of concerned citizen Gerald Chavez Kampanikiza wrote on his facebook page.

Mutharika then warned that Malawians will jealously defend their peace if endangered. He said Malawi has always have always defended peace with peace but that cannot be taken for granted either.

“I have warned this nation before. That if we sit back in silence and watch this spirit growing, one day evil will rule this nation and take us ransom. It only takes silence of the good people for evil to triumph.”

“One thing I know. We are peace lovers. But Malawians cannot be taken for granted. I repeat, we cannot take Malawians for granted.”

Mutharika was reelected last month but Malawi Congress Party’s Lazarus Chakwera and UTM leader Saulos Chilima are challenging results of the polls in court.

Opposition supporters have been protesting the results of the elections with violence incidents being recorded during the protests.

“Since we voted on 21 May, I have heard political leaders calling for bloodshed. We have seen two innocent children killed. We have seen innocent women stripped naked and beaten in public. We have seen our judges intimidated and justice threatened.

“Let me warn those inciting violence. Those who attack peace should know that we shall pay any price, confront any danger, conquer any challenge to defend our precious peace. We shall defend every Malawian, protect every school child, save every life to defend this country,” Mutharika said.

Leader of United Transformation Movement UTM Saulos Chilima says today’s protests are warm-ups and there will be more if Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah refuses to step down.

Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera joined protesters in Lilongwe demonstrating against the outcome of the May 21 elections.

The UTM leader said Malawians should not be afraid as they are expressing their right to demonstrate.

“This is about Malawi, I am a Malawian, Dr Chakwera here is a Malawian, we have joined fellow Malawians that are not happy with how the recent elections were conducted, we demand Justice,” he said.

When responding on the issue of the election court case, the UTM leader said they will let the court to do its work and the citizens to do their part.

In his remarks, Malawi Congress Party President Lazarus Chakwera said they want everyone at Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to resign from their positions for failing to manage the elections.

He therefore asked the people to march peacefully and promised to come to the streets if the demands are not met.

In a separate interview, Vice Chairperson for Human Rights Coalition Gift Trapence concurred with the two leaders saying Malawians will continue protesting.

The demonstrations have been organized by Civil Society Organization under the banner of HRDC.

UTM president Saulos Chilima has filed a petition with the High Court in Lilongwe, challenging the results of the May 21, 2019 polls.

Chilima is alleging that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) rigged the election.

The UTM leader only managed to secure 20 percent of the total votes and came a distant third, behind MCP’s Chakwera.

As counting of votes is underway in most parts of poling centers across the country, United Transformation Movement (UTM) has been hit badly in parliamentary polls as gurus’ fall.

This is according to unofficial results of the May 21 tripartite elections the country held.

Top officials of UTM that have failed to attain back their parliamentary seats include Secretary General Patricia Kaliati, UTM patron Noel Masangwi and Campaign director Lucius Banda.

UTM candidates are trailing badly against their rivals Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The first voice in endorsing Vice President Saulos Chilima and formulation of UTM Calista Mutharika, is also seem to be trailing behind MCP’s George Zulu.
