Zambian Government Accepts Court Decision on Lungu’s Final Resting Place

South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled in favour of the family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, overturning a previous Gauteng High Court decision that had ordered the repatriation of his remains to Zambia.

The court upheld the family’s appeal, set aside the lower court’s order, and dismissed the Zambian government’s application to return Lungu’s body for a state funeral.

As a result, Lungu’s remains will remain in South Africa, raising the possibility that he could be buried there.

Meanwhile, Zambia’s Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, has confirmed that the government will not challenge the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling.

The decision brings an end to the legal battle over the former president’s final resting place and clears the way for the family to determine the next steps regarding his burial.

The case stems from an appeal by the Lungu family against an earlier court decision directing that the former president’s body be repatriated to Zambia for burial with full state honours accorded to former heads of state.

The family has opposed the Zambian government’s plans for a state funeral, arguing for greater control over the burial arrangements.

The dispute has delayed the burial of the former president for more than a year. In June 2025, the family organised a burial ceremony in South Africa, but the Zambian government successfully obtained a court injunction stopping the proceedings.

As a result, Lungu’s remains have remained in South Africa pending the outcome of the legal process.

Woman Arrested for Allegedly Stabbing Taxi Driver in Hospital Trip Setup

A 24-year-old woman from Libuyu Compound has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a taxi driver after pretending she needed transport to hospital for medical treatment.

The victim, Patrick Mulenga, 50, of Highlands Township, sustained a deep cut to the head, stab wounds on the ribs and injuries to his hand during the attack.

According to Moono Namalongo, Southern Province Police Commissioner, the incident happened around 07:00 hours on May 14, 2026.Police say Mulenga received a phone call from a woman requesting to be picked up from Highlands Township and taken to hospital.

Upon arrival, he reportedly found a man and a woman whose face was covered, and drove them to the hospital.However, after reaching the hospital, the woman later identified as allegedly claimed she had forgotten money at home, prompting them to return to Highlands Township.

When they arrived at a locked house, Mwansa allegedly asked the driver to help open the door. While assisting, Mulenga was suddenly attacked with a sharp object.

Police say the woman stabbed him multiple times using a knife before the victim managed to remove her face covering and recognised her as someone known to him.

The male suspect who had accompanied the woman fled the scene and remains at large. Despite his injuries, Mulenga managed to apprehend Mwansa and took her to police.

The victim is currently admitted to Livingstone Teaching Hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition. Police have since recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack and investigations are continuing.

The Zambia Police Service has recorded two separate murder cases involving children in Nchelenge District and Chibombo District, sparking concern.

In Nchelenge, police have detained a couple over the suspected murder of a one-year-old boy, Justine Mwansa.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the child’s mother, Doreen Mpundu (24), married John Chishimba (40) in 2025, and the child—reportedly from a previous relationship—was allegedly not accepted by the stepfather.

Police allege that on the night of February 20, 2026, the child was assaulted and later died after losing consciousness. The couple is further accused of burying the body in a bushy area without reporting the incident before relocating to another village.

The matter only came to light on May 4 when the mother reported a domestic dispute to a local headman and later disclosed the alleged murder. Members of the Community Crime Prevention Unit apprehended the couple and handed them over to police.

Officers have since recovered the child’s body in a decomposed state. The suspects remain in custody, and a post-mortem examination is yet to be conducted as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, in Chibombo, police are investigating the murder of a five-year-old girl who went missing after being sent on an errand and was later found dead in nearby bushes.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and have appealed to the public for information that could assist in the Chibombo case.

Mob Kills Woman ‘Hellen Kamutumbe’ Over “Vanishing Manhood” Accusation in Zambia

A 46-year-old woman, Eneless Hellen Kamutumbe, has been killed by a mob in Kalumbila, after being accused of causing a man’s private parts to disappear.

The incident occurred on March 20, 2026, at Kisasa Market between 11:30 and 13:00 hours.

According to reports, Kamutumbe was shopping when she accidentally came into contact with a 25-year-old man identified as Prince Ntambo, who suddenly began shouting and accused her of “stealing his manhood.”

The allegation quickly triggered mob action, with bystanders attacking and stoning her without verifying the claim, despite her attempts to defend herself.

As the situation escalated, Ntambo reportedly tried to reverse the situation and protect the woman, but his efforts failed to stop the violent crowd.

Police officers arrived at the scene but were overpowered by the mob, resulting in three officers being seriously injured and a police vehicle being damaged.

By around 13:00 hours, Kamutumbe had succumbed to her injuries, and the mob fled the scene, leaving her body along the Kisasa–Kalumbila road. Police later transported the body to Bumi Mine Hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

Authorities have since arrested eight suspects to assist with investigations.

The incident has sparked outrage, with calls for action against mob justice and harmful superstitious beliefs, which continue to claim lives. Reports indicate that this is the third such killing in Kalumbila District.

Lusaka Man Arrested Over Image of President Hichilema in Coffin

The Zambia Police Service has formally charged and arrested Mambwe Zimba of Water Works area in Libala South, Lusaka, for allegedly transmitting deceptive electronic communication.

According to Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha, the suspect has been charged under Section 19(1)(a) of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025.

Kaitisha said Zimba was apprehended following a joint operation conducted by the Zambia Police Service in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.

She explained that on February 22, 2026, Zimba, allegedly acting as an administrator of a Facebook page known as “Zambia for All 2026,” transmitted what police described as a deceptive and misleading electronic image.

The image allegedly falsely depicted Hakainde Hichilema lying in a coffin.

Police say the publication was false and misleading to members of the public both within and outside Zambia.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.

Court Hears How Man Caught in Married Woman’s Bedroom Was Allegedly Beaten

The Lusaka Magistrate’s Court in Zambia has heard dramatic testimony in a case where a man accused of assaulting a married man claims he was, in fact, the one who was beaten.

Dickson Musopelo, 35, a physicist, is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm after allegedly punching an army officer who reportedly caught him inside his matrimonial bedroom with his wife on September 26, 2025.

The case is being heard before Magistrate Victoria Mututwa, who earlier found that Musopelo had a case to answer and placed him on his defence.

According to court proceedings, the alleged victim referred to as Mr Chisha (a pseudonym) is said to have found Musopelo in his bedroom after 22:00 hours. It is alleged that the wife asked Musopelo to hide in a wardrobe when her husband unexpectedly entered the house. Following an altercation, Musopelo, who was reportedly half-dressed, allegedly punched Mr Chisha, causing injury.

However, in his defence, Musopelo told the court a different version of events through his witnesses.

His sister, Martha Musopelo, 39, of Kamwala South, testified that on September 27, 2025, her brother came to her home bleeding, with bruises on his left eye and two broken teeth. She told the court she rushed him to Kabwata Police to obtain a medical report before taking him to the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) for treatment.

Under cross-examination by State prosecutor Georgina Daka, Martha admitted that the medical report described her brother as “stable” and did not indicate active bleeding at the time of examination. She also conceded that she was not present during the alleged incident on September 26 and could not state what transpired that night.

A medical doctor, Sithokozile Nandazi, also testified that she attended to Musopelo at the casualty department in September 2025. She told the court that he complained of jaw pain, difficulty swallowing, nausea, and had sustained two broken teeth, a laceration above the eye, and bruising on the neck.

According to the doctor, Musopelo reported that he had been struck and briefly lost consciousness after the husband allegedly attempted to beat him and tried to strangle him.

During cross-examination, Dr Nandazi admitted she did not conduct a specific examination on the broken teeth and had not presented photographs or physical evidence of them before the court. She further acknowledged that the injuries could have been caused by another person or self-inflicted. She also confirmed that Musopelo was stable and not bleeding at the time she examined him.

Judgment in the matter is expected to be delivered on Friday.

Police Officer Arrested For Alleged Sodomy of 13 Year-old Nephew

‎A police officer based in Kabwe Zambia has been arrested and charged with sòdòmy following allegations that he repeatedly assaulted his 13-year-old nephew over the school holidays.

‎The case was reported to Chawama Police Station on Saturday, February 7, 2026, by the victim’s father.

‎

‎ According to the police report, the suspect, Sammy Jere, an officer stationed at Kasanda Police Station in Central Province, is accused of having carnal knowledge of his nephew against the order of nature.

‎

‎The alleged assaults occurred on multiple occasions at the suspect’s home in Bwacha compound, Kabwe, between December 2025 and January 2026.

‎

‎The victim had traveled to Kabwe to spend the school holidays with his uncle. It is alleged that during this time, the suspect forced the boy to sleep in the same bedroom with him, exposed him to p0rn0graphic material, and proceeded to s£xually assault him.

‎

‎The matter came to light after the boy returned to his parents’ home in Lusaka. His parents noticed significant behavioral changes and, upon questioning him, he disclosed the alleged abuse.

‎

‎Following the report, police issued a medical report form. The victim was examined at Chawama Level One Hospital, where a doctor confirmed the findings.

‎

‎The suspect has since been apprehended, officially charged and is currently in police custody awaiting court proceedings.

‎

‎ Police have stated that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

House Maid Arrested for Stealing Child and Valuables from Employer

The incident is alleged to have occurred on 22nd January 2026, around 14:00 hours, with the victim complaining of a painful private part.

Gathered information indicates that the suspect approached the victim while she was working and expressed his intention to have carnal knowledge of her.

When she refused to comply, the suspect allegedly overpowered her and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene, with the girl relaying the ordeal to her aunt after she returned home.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, notes that a Medical Report Form was issued to the victim, who was referred to hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Naked Man Found Bathing at Mortuary in Zambia

Police in Lusaka are investigating a bizarre incident in which a man was found bathing naked inside the mortuary at the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH).

The man, identified only as Michael and believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to an eyewitness, he was bathing in the area where bodies are normally washed, causing fear among workers at the facility.

The eyewitness said staff initially panicked but later realized the man himself appeared terrified.
With no officers immediately present, workers apprehended him and dragged him to the hospital police post.

He was later taken to Kabwata Police Station, where he remains in police custody.

Zambia Police Service public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident and said relatives informed police that Michael has a mental health condition.

Luundu Mwanakasale, a Zambian woman who was left paralyzed after a tragic road accident in December 2014, has shared how her life changed dramatically just days before her planned wedding.

At the time, Luundu was a 24-year-old teaching student engaged to be married and was on her way to Livingstone to try on her wedding dress when the accident happened.

Her fiancé was the one driving the vehicle, and as they reached Monze, the car overturned, resulting in a serious crash.

While her fiancé escaped the accident unscathed, Luundu sustained a severe spinal injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down and led to the loss of her five-month pregnancy.

Doctors informed her that she would never walk again, and she was confined to a wheelchair—a devastating blow that came just a month before her wedding day.

Luundu spent nearly three months in the hospital, during which her fiancé remained in contact and pretended to support her through the ordeal.

Though they continued dating for three more years after the accident, she was unaware that he had found another woman and was secretly planning a wedding.

Just four days before his wedding, Luundu learned through a friend that her fiancé was about to marry someone else simply because she could no longer walk.

Charles Sakala, 44, claimed he repeatedly dreamt that his wife, Mirriam Banda, was cheating on him, and said the visions were too vivid to ignore.

Despite no real evidence of infidelity, Sakala took the dreams seriously and abruptly left their home, abandoning his wife and three children for six months.

When he returned, it wasn’t to reconcile, but to demand a divorce, accusing Banda of being involved with a man who had shown interest in her at the spice shop where she works.

Leonard Phiri, a Zambian, and Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, a Mozambican, were arrested in December 2024 and convicted under Zambia’s Witchcraft Act.

Authorities said the men, believed to be witchdoctors, were found with assorted charms, including a live chameleon, which they intended to use in a deadly ritual.

Judge Fine Mayambu declared the men enemies of the state and rejected their lawyer’s plea for leniency, stressing the seriousness of the offense.

The trial marked the first time in Zambia’s history that witchcraft was allegedly used against a sitting president.

Despite claiming to be traditional healers, the men admitted to owning the charms and explained how the ritual was meant to cause death within five days.

Legal expert Dickson Jere noted such prosecutions are rare and highlighted the law’s original aim to protect vulnerable groups from witchcraft-related violence.

Spokesperson for the family of former President Edgar Lungu, Makebi Zulu, says there are no ongoing talks with the Zambian government regarding Mr. Lungu’s burial site.

Mr. Zulu explained that the family is instead awaiting the Pretoria High Court’s decision on their application for leave to appeal its ruling ordering the repatriation of Mr. Lungu’s body for a state funeral in Zambia.

He added that the Constitutional Court advised the family to take their direct appeal to the Supreme Court.

This comes after President Hakainde Hichilema announced on Monday, August 25, 2025, that government officials were still engaging with members of the former First Family in South Africa over the matter.

SA Court Dismisses Edgar Lungu Family’s Burial Appeal

The Constitutional Court of South Africa has dismissed an application by the family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu to review a dispute between the family and the Zambian government over his burial site.
