A Malawi-born medical doctor based in South Africa, McBride Nkhalamba, has donated K5 million to support efforts aimed at repatriating Malawians displaced by ongoing xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa.

The donation was announced by social media influencer Stanley Onjezani Kenani, who is among those coordinating fundraising initiatives to assist affected Malawians seeking to return home.

In a social media post, Kenani expressed gratitude to Dr. Nkhalamba, describing the donation as a significant act of compassion and leadership during a difficult period for many Malawians living in South Africa.

According to Kenani, the contribution has pushed the fundraising total to K11.8 million. The campaign has also facilitated the transfer of R400,000 to South Africa to help transport affected Malawians back to Malawi using two buses.

Dr. Nkhalamba joins a growing list of individuals, businesses and organisations that have stepped forward to support Malawians affected by the unrest.

Meanwhile, the donation has attracted widespread praise on social media, with some users commending Dr. Nkhalamba’s willingness to act quickly during the crisis.

Among those who commented was congressman  Sylvester Ayuba James, who praised the doctor’s leadership qualities and ability to make swift decisions.

“Ma delegates a Kongiresi, chidodo ayi ayi. Munthu ndi yemweyi, ochangamuka. We need someone who can make quick decisions and has an idea about the economy,” wrote James in a comment that has since generated discussion online.

The fundraising drive comes as hundreds of Malawians continue seeking assistance following recent attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, with authorities and humanitarian groups working to facilitate voluntary repatriation efforts.

Popular Malawian actor Frank Yalu, popularly known by his stage name Nginde, has appealed for financial assistance as he continues to battle throat cancer.

Yalu was diagnosed with the disease last year, a development that forced him to stop acting, which had been one of the main sources of income for his family.

Speaking on his behalf, his wife, Joyce Yalu, said the family is facing significant financial challenges as both of them have been unable to work due to his illness.

She explained that Yalu is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and requires regular visits to the hospital for continued medical care.

Joyce has since appealed to well-wishers to assist the family with financial support to help cover transport and other treatment-related expenses.

“We would be grateful for any assistance that can help him continue receiving treatment and eventually recover,” she said.

Despite his health struggles, Yalu has remained committed to the arts and has recently been appearing in the Times TV drama series Mfumukazi, where he plays the character Achitsime. The series was written by Flora Suya.

The actor expressed hope that with treatment and support from well-wishers, he will regain his health and return to entertaining Malawians through his acting career.

The appeal has already begun attracting sympathy from fans and fellow artists, many of whom have praised Yalu for his contribution to Malawi’s film and television industry over the years.

Police in Bangwe, Blantyre city have arrested a 21-year-old man, Humphrey Symon, on suspicion of having sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl from Mondiwa, T/A Machinjiri, in the county.

According to Bangwe police spokesperson Sam Kadyole, on June 22, 2026, the girl’s mother reported her missing daughter and she was later found the next day at Naizi Primary School.

“Upon questioning her whereabouts, the girl confessed that Symon had forced her to go to her house by threatening her, and raped her twice before letting her out,” he said.

Kadyole added that the mother reported the matter to Bangwe police, which led to Symon’s arrest.

“The girl was taken to Gulupu Hospital where it was confirmed that she had been raped,” they said.

Symon, who hails from Chiswe, is expected to appear in court soon.

Police have arrested Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere, Member of Parliament for Mzimba South Constituency, over allegations of quarry theft.

His lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, confirmed the arrest, saying the lawmaker had been summoned to the Malawi Police Headquarters at Area 30 in Lilongwe on Wednesday morning.

According to Kadzipatike, Jere denies the allegations and was subsequently taken to Lumbadzi Police Station.

“It is unfortunate that this case is coming after five years and immediately after Chambulanyina, together with others, obtained an injunction against the relocation of the Malawi Electoral Commission to Blantyre,” Kadzipatike said.

On Tuesday, Jere suggested that the summons could be linked to a quarry he says he legally purchased from a Chinese company involved in the construction of the Jenda–Edingeni Road in 2021.

National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo has since confirmed both the arrest and the reasons behind it.

Police are yet to provide further details on the allegations and any charges that may be brought against the legislator.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services has deported two Bangladeshi nationals and facilitated the voluntary repatriation of 11 Ethiopian migrants as part of ongoing efforts to enforce Malawi’s immigration laws.

The department said the two Bangladeshis entered the country illegally through Karonga, while the Ethiopian nationals had completed four-year prison sentences after being convicted of immigration-related offences.

All 13 individuals departed Malawi on Monday aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight, according to immigration authorities.

A 40-year-old man,Alick Kayira has died after taking poison at Jenda in Mzimba.

The incident occurred during the night of 22-23 June,2026 at Jenda trading centre.

Speaking to Power Online Jenda Police Public Relations Officer Sub-Inpector Gladwell Simwaka,indicate that, Kayira came to Jenda with his colleagues from Mzuzu for work and booked himself a room at a certain lodge within the trading centre.

“In the morning of June 23, 2026 he was discovered lifeless in his room by workers at the lodge.

“The matter was reported to Jenda police station where Detective police officers together with medical officer from Jenda Rural Hospital rushed to the scene and conducted postmortem which showed that death was due to respiratory failure, secondary to organophosphate poisoning”,narrated Simwaka.

The motive for taking his life has not been established.

Meanwhile,the police have advised people to avoid taking their own life whenever,they face challenges rather seek counselling and support from authorities.

Kayira hailed from Lalika village in T/A Kyungu in Karonga district and until his death he was working as a driver for Banja la Mtsogolo.

South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled in favour of the family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, overturning a previous Gauteng High Court decision that had ordered the repatriation of his remains to Zambia.

The court upheld the family’s appeal, set aside the lower court’s order, and dismissed the Zambian government’s application to return Lungu’s body for a state funeral.

As a result, Lungu’s remains will remain in South Africa, raising the possibility that he could be buried there.

Meanwhile, Zambia’s Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, has confirmed that the government will not challenge the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling.

The decision brings an end to the legal battle over the former president’s final resting place and clears the way for the family to determine the next steps regarding his burial.

Kawale Police have recovered property worth millions of kwacha and arrested three suspects in connection with a series of house break-ins and thefts in Lilongwe.

The suspects, identified as Jimmy Kafala, Jonas Banda and Kondwani Phimba, were arrested following an intelligence-led operation targeting individuals linked to the crimes.

The operation was launched after police received a report that the house of Bauleni Kalima in Kaliyeka had been broken into during the night of June 18 and 19, 2026. The burglars reportedly stole a 55-inch Sony plasma television and two Tecno Pop 10 mobile phones.

Acting on intelligence, detectives tracked leads to the Kawale Chilumba area while searching for a known suspect, popularly known as “Bouncer.”

During the operation, officers discovered two plasma television sets abandoned in nearby bushes. One of the recovered televisions, an LG plasma screen, was later identified by Mervis Mkandawire, who had also reported a burglary at her residence on the same night.

Kawale Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Prisca Kuyere Mtikwa confirmed the arrests and said investigations are continuing. She added that detectives are still pursuing other suspects believed to be connected to the thefts.

Police have since appealed to members of the public to continue providing information that could assist in the recovery of stolen property and the arrest of remaining suspects.

A woman has died while travelling from South Africa to Malawi after suddenly falling ill during the journey.

Commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, Wilson Moleni, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

Moleni said the woman became ill and later died while the bus was passing through Zimbabwe.

He added that arrangements are currently underway to repatriate her body to Malawi.

Malawian musician Emmie Deebo has appealed to his fans for support after his official Facebook and TikTok pages suddenly disappeared, leaving many followers shocked and confused.

The incident comes just as the artist recently began operating as an independent musician following the end of his deal with Akometsi Entertainment, a split whose circumstances remain unclear.

Many fans noticed on Tuesday morning that Emmie Deebo’s Facebook and TikTok accounts were no longer accessible, sparking widespread speculation on social media.

“First, we lost our YouTube channel. It was heartbreaking, but you stood by me and supported my new channel without hesitation. I’ll never forget that,” he wrote.

The Malomo First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Ntchisi has sentenced two men to 10 years imprisonment each for stealing Electrical Supply Corporation of  Malawi (ESCOM) cables valued at K942,000.

The convicts, Frank Masankho, 21, and Dile Leward, 25, were found guilty of stealing cables from an ESCOM transformer located near Malomo Tomato Factory during the night of April 25, 2026.

State prosecutor Felix Masilikali told the court that the two were arrested following investigations into the theft of the electricity infrastructure.

During court proceedings, both Masankho and Leward pleaded guilty to the charge.

In his submission, Masilikali urged the court to impose a stiff sentence, arguing that cases of vandalism and theft of electricity infrastructure are becoming increasingly common in the area.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Damiano Banda said a custodial punishment was necessary to deter would-be offenders and protect public infrastructure.

The two will each serve 10 years in prison.

Police in Mzuzu have arrested five people in connection with the possession of suspected stolen property recovered from various locations in the city.

According to Northern Region Police spokesperson Cecilia Mfune, the suspects were arrested during overnight operations conducted in Katoto and Area 4.

Among the items recovered by police are laptops, mobile phones and a motorcycle, all believed to have been stolen from different victims.

Police say investigations are continuing to establish the origin of the recovered property and whether the suspects are linked to other theft-related cases in the city.

Meanwhile, images circulating on social media purportedly showing the suspects after their arrest have attracted widespread attention online.

The photos show some of the suspects with visibly swollen faces and injuries, prompting a wave of reactions from social media users. The High Court of Malawi has ruled that a 2012 government directive barring businessman Leston Mulli and five of his companies from securing public contracts was unlawful.

In a judgment delivered on Monday, Justice Allan Hans Muhome found that then Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Ralph Kasambara acted without legal authority when he issued the directive on September 5, 2012.

The court also ruled that Mulli and his companies were denied their right to be heard before the decision was made, rendering the directive procedurally unfair.

As part of the ruling, the court ordered that damages arising from losses directly attributable to the ban be assessed by the Chief Registrar if the parties fail to agree on the amount within 14 days.

Mulli and the five companies had sued the State, claiming K270 billion in losses allegedly suffered after government ministries, departments and agencies ceased doing business with them following the directive.

Minister of Defence Feston Kaupa has told the parliamentary inquiry into the Chikangawa plane crash that the military aircraft involved in the accident was not equipped with a cockpit voice recorder or flight data recorder, commonly known as a black box.

Responding to questions from members of the inquiry, Kaupa said military aircraft are not required to carry black boxes under existing aviation regulations.

“According to the reports I have seen, there was no black box, considering that military aircraft are not required to have one according to the Chicago Convention. However, I cannot independently or personally verify this because I was not there,” Kaupa told the committee.

Despite the absence of a black box, the Defence Minister said the circumstances surrounding the crash still require thorough investigation to establish what led to the accident.

The parliamentary inquiry is examining the events surrounding the Chikangawa plane crash as well as the broader systems governing military aviation safety, regulation and oversight.

The findings of the inquiry are expected to help determine whether existing procedures and safety measures within military aviation are adequate and identify any areas requiring reform.

Four suspected vandals are in police custody after they were caught attempting to steal copper windings from an electricity transformer at an Eastern Produce Malawi (EPM) estate in Thyolo.

According to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), the incident occurred during the night of June 21–22, 2026, when the suspects allegedly pulled down and dismantled a 100kVA transformer at the estate.

However, the theft attempt was thwarted after EPM security guards and vigilant community members quickly mobilized and apprehended the suspects before they could escape with the stolen materials.

ESCOM has strongly condemned the act, describing vandalism as a serious threat to national development and electricity supply.

Speaking on the matter, ESCOM Chief Public Relations and Communications Officer Pilirani Phiri said vandalism forces the corporation to divert limited resources towards replacing damaged infrastructure instead of expanding electricity access to more Malawians.

Phiri commended the estate guards and local residents for their swift response, saying their actions demonstrate the important role communities play in protecting public infrastructure.

“This proactive intervention sends a powerful message that citizens are watching and will actively defend their ESCOM infrastructure in their communities,” he said.

ESCOM has since urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around power installations, emphasizing that electricity infrastructure is a community asset that supports livelihoods and economic development.

The corporation believes continued public awareness and community ownership are key to ending vandalism and safeguarding the country’s power network.
