The remains of Joshua Divala, a weekend student at Catholic University of Malawi who died yesterday after being involved in a motorcycle accident, will be laid to rest today at Kalonga village in Ntcheu.

According to a Catholic University statement, late Divala met his fate on Wednesday, 9 July 2025, at Tsangano in Ntcheu. He was a weekend student studying a Diploma in Education.

The funeral ceremony will begin with a mass ceremony today.

The 23rd graduation of the Catholic University of Malawi is underway at its main campus in Nguludi, Chiradzulu.

A total of 1,475 students are expected to graduate with various Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates.

The graduation is being led by Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa, the Chancellor of the university.

The theme of the graduation is “Levering knowledge ecosystem for social-economic transformation,”.

Catholic University (CU) is facing mounting pressure to make public the findings of its investigations into the leakage of pornographic content allegedly filmed by some of its students. A leaked memo from the university reveals that a nine-member task force has been established to delve into the matter and is expected to present its findings to the university’s vice chancellor today.

Dr Foster Lungu, the Dean of Education at Mzuzu University, has emphasized the importance of CU publicizing the investigation findings in order to protect and restore its public image. According to Dr Lungu, it is the responsibility of the institution to be transparent and open about such incidents.

While confirming the establishment of the task force, which includes members such as the assistant registrar, chaplain, and dean of students, university authorities have stated that they are still undecided on whether to publicize the findings or not.

The leaking of pornographic content purportedly involving CU students has brought significant attention to the university, prompting concerns from both the public and academic circles. Many are urging CU to take decisive action and address the issue promptly to maintain its reputation and credibility.

It never rains but pours for Catholic University (CU) as it is again making headlines on social media for its recent gist.

This time around its not ’Thomas’ who has pushed the university to attract attention, however it is still relationship drama.

A continuing student who was (is) dating a year0 has manhandled his girlfriend reaching to the point of smashing her phone for allegedly cheating on him.

According to the gist, the girl has been telling her boyfriend that she is related to the man.

As there is a saying that there is no secret under the sun, the man found messages in his girlfriend’s phone purportedly from the relative.

When confronted, the girl failed to defend herself which forced the boyfriend to beat her and smashed her phone.

The Catholic University of Malawi (CU) has distanced itself from a scandal involving Thomas and his girlfriend Lonje following a recent audio leak.

CU claims that Lonje is a student with the University but not her boyfriend who the institution revealed to have turned his application down.

However, CU, an institution of higher learning, claims to have established that the audio was made before she was accepted at CU.

In the audio which trended on Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp, Lonje is heard boasting of her first s*xual encounter with Thomas. Her account of events is vivid.

The university did not stipulate how it carried out its investigation.

“Investigation reveals that the boy and girl who are in a picture circulating on social media both applied at our university and only the girl made it to our university and that time they were in a relationship. The controversial audio clip that is enjoying social media stunt was produced when these two were secondary school leavers” CU posted on Twitter.

It is however not known what prompted the University to issue the clarification through the now-deleted tweet.

In less than a week since Catholic University has been the topic over Thomas scandal, it has again added the spice but this time around is about theft.

A first year female student has been caught stealing from a continuous student, whereas she stole a bag and a phone.

According to reports, the girl who sleeps off campus, saw herself in the campus premises and committed the crime.

Luckily the guards came to her rescue otherwise she would have been devoured alive by the angry students who were baying for her blood.

However, other information sourced by this publication, indicate that the student is not from CU but she is from Mpemba Law School and she went to CU to visit a friend.

Catholic University students are today expected to petition Chiradzulu Police, in protest to the closure of Nguludi police unit.

The unit was closed following the row that erupted between the police and the communities over a death of one of the community members.

The students argue that the absence of the police unit is a posing a huge threat to security around the area.

Seeking to promote modern education among Muslims and reduce stampede for university places, Malawi is planning to open the country’s first Islamic university for students interested in studying Islam.

“We all have the common purpose of seeing Malawi as a country develop and through the right leadership this is possible,” Sidik Mia, Minister of Transports and Public Works, told the media on Monday, April 29.

“Leaders need our support.”

Meeting with Muslim leaders at Mangochi Boma Sub mosque, Mia announced plans to open an Islamic university to promote modern education among Muslims in Malawi.

The new institution would welcome students with an interest in Islam, offering them a chance to earn a degree in Islamic studies.

The plans will be launched soon with support from Direct AID Society from Kuwait.

There are currently church-run universities which include the African Bible College, the Livingstonia University owned by Church of Central Africa Presbytery, Seventh Day Adventist University and Catholic University.

There are also three state universities in the country.

As the country is suffering from stampede for university students, the opening of the Islamic university will help ease the problem.

Helping Needy

Minister Mia urged Muslims to realize the importance of assisting towards the growth of Islam and providing help for the needy.

“I call upon the Muslim community to embrace the spirit of helping the needy,” Mia, who is the vice president of People’s Party (South), said.

Setting an example, the minister made donation amounting to over K2.5 million for building projects of additional school blocks at the primary school under the Sub Mosque.

The Minister, who is Vice President of the Muslim Association of Malawi Board, also donated money towards the building project at Mathanjesi Mosque within Mangochi Boma.

Islam is the second largest religion in the southern African country after Christianity.

Official statistics suggest Muslims constitute 12 percent of the country’s 12 million people, but the umbrella Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) puts the rate at 36.

A survey by National Aids Commission has revealed that 56 percent of Malawi’s college students (UNIMA, Mzuni, Catholic University) are HIV positive. Although NAC is withholding the results of the survey it conducted.

March 2, 2013 has been set as the day when all tertiary students in Malawi will demonstrate against the government of Malawi to respect the right to education and economic development.

The students demand that the government be responsible for the disbursement of loans either directly, or by way of commercial banks, to allow them to pay for their tertiary education.

In Blantyre, the demonstrators will converge at Malawi Polytechnic at 8:30 am where they will march to Sanjika Palace to present their petition.

The demonstrations will involve all tertiary students in Malawi Colleges, whether Public, Insitutional or Private, be it Chanco normal and Parallel, Poly Normal and Parallel, Bunda, KCN, Mzuni, NRC, Domasi College, St John’s DMI, MCA, Malawi College of Health Sciences, all CHAM Colleges, Shareworld Open University, Blantyre International University, Malawi Adventist University, Catholic University, and any other tertiary institution.

Government is being asked to introduce a system where anyone enrolled in such institution should be able to access loans, either directly from government, or through commercial banks, so as to attain the right to education for all and economic development.

Chancellor College has categorically denied looting foodstuffs worth about K300, 000 from the cafeteria at the Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima) and has since asked for proof on the same.

Students’ union president Patrick Phiri said on Monday in reaction to concerns from Street Wise Dealers, which was providing catering services at the time of the looting, over delays by Chanco to pay for the looted goods.

The caterers’ manager Precious Lipenga said in an interview over the weekend that despite making the claim in writing, not even a penny has been paid so far.

“Though I forwarded a letter through Catholic University claiming K300, 000 from Chancellor College to cover for the confiscated foodstuffs, nine months have elapsed now without getting anything positive. And being a business, this is worrisome,” Lipenga said.

He said each time he inquired about the matter from Catholic University, the responses were the same that “the issue is with Chancellor College.”

Catholic University’s Registrar Mr Mavumbe acknowledged writing Chancellor College on the issue but said as far as he was concerned, the matter is no longer in his hands.

“As far as I am concerned, that issue was handled. We communicated to the Chancellor College regarding the claim. That’s all I can say. As to whether or not Chancellor College responded to our letter is not in our hands; it is in the hands of Chancellor College. So, find out from Chancellor College,” Mavumbe said.

But Phiri who is Chanco students’ union leader, while confirming receipt of the letter, said the claim could hardly be honoured unless it is established that it was really the students who looted the cafeteria.

“The information we got from the security officer points to the fact that there was of course some sort of a fracas but it has not yet been established if the looting was really done by Chancellor College students.

“Such being the case, it has to be established first if it is our students who did it before we start talking about the alleged looters contributing towards settling the claim,” Phiri said.

The staff at the said cafeteria are on record to have said that a group of Chancellor College students who had gone to Catholic University for sporting activities invaded the cafeteria, demanding food.

In the process they allegedly ransacked the cafeteria, looting cooked rice, beef, tomatoes and fresh Irish potatoes from the store room, plus cell phones of the cooks in the process.
