Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Eastern Region, Bright Msaka, along with MacDonald Makanjira, has filed a petition to the High Court seeking to nullify the results of the Machinga Likwenu parliamentary election and order a fresh poll.

In their petition, the two allege that several irregularities took place before, during, and after polling day.

Among the cited issues are the opening and leaving of ballot papers unsealed before election day, the denial of access to party monitors to verify the ballot papers, and continued campaigning by one of the candidates, Tulinje Muluzi, after the official campaign period had ended.

The petitioners also raise concerns about irregularities in vote counting and discrepancies in the final vote tallies.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) had declared Tulinje Muluzi the winner of the Machinga Likwenu parliamentary seat.

President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have decided to withdraw their judicial review application regarding the September 16 presidential election results, despite being granted permission by the High Court on Tuesday.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila confirmed the decision in an interview, stating it follows President Chakwera’s concession of defeat in the election.

“The case initiated by President Chakwera and the MCP will be withdrawn because he has conceded defeat in the election,” Kabwila said.

Earlier, Chakwera and the MCP had sought a court order to halt the announcement of the presidential results and to pursue a judicial review over the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) alleged failure or refusal to address the party’s complaint concerning electoral irregularities.

While High Court Judge Howard Pemba denied the request for a restraining order, he granted the party permission to proceed with a judicial review. However, that process will now be discontinued.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has denied reports that it has conceded defeat in the elections held last Tuesday.

The party said a letter circulating on various social media platforms, claiming that it has conceded defeat, is false.

According to MCP, the letter being widely shared online is fake and misleading, especially given that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has not yet declared a winner in the election.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it has not yet received any official complaint from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regarding the ongoing electoral process.

MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, clarified that while the Commission has received complaints from some individual members of the party, no formal complaint has been submitted by the party itself.

Justice Mtalimanja made the remarks following allegations made by MCP official Vitumbiko Mumba during an MCP press conference, where he claimed that the party has uncovered evidence of election fraud involving certain individuals.

Mumba stated that irregularities had been observed in several districts, including Mangochi, Thyolo, Phalombe, Rumphi, Mzimba, and others.

He claimed that the party has since contacted MEC regarding the matter and expressed confidence that the Commission will act in accordance with electoral regulations.

Justice Mtalimanja assured the public that all complaints lodged with the Commission will be addressed in line with the country’s electoral laws.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) last night announced the official results for four council districts, which show that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate, Peter Mutharika, is leading with 50,131 votes.

He is followed by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate, Lazarus Chakwera, who so far has 13,139 votes from the four districts.

MEC is expected to make announcement of more results today.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidates Jessie Kabwila (Salima Central West) and Mike Ng’ombe Mwawa (Salima South Linthipe) have lodged complaints with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) over the parliamentary results in their respective constituencies.

MEC District Elections Officer Alinafe Chisenga confirmed receipt of the complaints, stating that they will be forwarded to the Commission in Lilongwe for determination.

“We received two letters from Jessie Kabwila and Mike Ng’ombe Mwawa disputing some results, and they will be submitted to the Commission,” she said.

According to unofficial results, Kabwila secured 9,016 votes, losing to Enock Phale who garnered 13,895 votes in Salima Central West. In Salima South Linthipe, Mwawa obtained 5,407 votes, while Maxwell Joshua Chimzemze won with 5,985 votes.

Information reaching this publication indicates that drivers working for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) during the general elections have gone on strike, demanding payment of half of their salaries.

The disgruntled drivers have parked their heavy trucks at MEC offices in Blantyre, effectively halting the movement of electoral materials.

One of the drivers, Mayeso Mitulo, stated that they began working on September 1, 2025, and while some received half of their salaries, others received nothing at all.

Mitulo added that they have attempted to engage MEC officials over the matter, but their efforts have not yielded any results.

As a result, the drivers have resolved not to move any commission assets until their salary concerns are addressed.

As vote counting is currently underway in the Tuesday General Elections, some concerned people led by Chiefs from Machinjiri on Thursday stormed South Lunzu Tally centre to express their anger over the outcome of the Parliamentary polls.

People in the constituency led by chiefs in South Lunzu suspect some foul play on the result as report indicates that the unofficial winner is Veronica Ndalama of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) who has amassed 8, 542 votes seconded by Rashid Gaffer, an Independent candidate who has got 7, 651 votes.

Independent Shadow MP Alex Achalume Chimwala is on position 3 with 4, 971 votes.

In the letter addressed to one of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Presiding Officer Bexter Nthulura seen by this publication, the Chiefs led by Group Village headman Bwanahaji, Chief Anderson and Nanthoka claimed that Ndalama used money to manipulate voters.

The Chiefs claim that Ndalama promised voters on the polling day money amounting to MK300, 000 and a bag of maize once they vote for her.

According to the people, this played a role as some voted for Ndalama because of the money which was given to them.

When asked to comment on the complaint raised by Chiefs Nthulura refereed this reporter to MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa.

Meanwhile Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Soldiers and armed police officers have been deployed to the centre.

MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja is scheduled to announce the outcome of Parliament polls after 14 days.

Information reaching this publication indicates that confirmed that several people vandalized the home of Councillor Jawadu Likambale of Mtundawosema kwa Goliati.

The attackers reportedly broke windows, smashed doors, and partially demolished the house. The incident followed the Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu party’s failure to pay polling station monitors for their election duties.

Majawa stated that 120 monitors have not received their payments and urged the party to address the issue urgently.

He also confirmed that Likambale has fled the area with his family for safety.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) held a press conference today at its headquarters, expressing confidence that Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has won the presidential election.

Jessie Kabwila, who was speaking at the presser, told reporters the party expects a “70+1” victory and is only waiting for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to make the official declaration.

Kabwila said he respects MEC’s authority but firmly believes Malawians have already chosen Chakwera to continue as president.

He also revealed that some party leaders skipped the press briefing because they are preparing for Chakwera’s swearing-in ceremony.

Jessie Chabwira echoed the sentiment, saying the votes reflect strong support for Chakwera.

Kabwila urged the public not to be misled by unofficial figures, stating clearly that Chakwera has already won.

United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi has urged Malawians to remain calm and patient as unofficial election results continue to circulate online.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Muluzi emphasized that only the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is legally mandated to announce official results.

He warned that sharing unverified figures undermines the integrity of the electoral process and risks spreading confusion.

Muluzi called on all citizens and political actors to allow the verification process to proceed without interference.

He also appealed to election monitors to remain vigilant and peaceful as the vote-counting continues.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) senior member Mumba has called on party supporters to remain calm and focused amid increasing online speculation suggesting a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) victory.

In a message to followers via his Facebook page, he warned that the figures circulating on social media are not official and are being used to manipulate public perception.

Mumba emphasized that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has counted less than 10% of the votes and remains the only body authorized to declare results.

He accused the opposing camp of spreading false numbers to create doubt and confusion among MCP supporters.

Despite the noise, Mumba said he remains hopeful and confident in the process.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja has disclosed that two members of an unnamed political party were arrested in the Chipala, Nafisi area of Lilongwe after being found at a constituency tally center without a permit.

Mtalimanja made the remarks during MEC’s press briefing in Lilongwe on the progress of preparations for next week’s general election.

The Chairperson reminded party representatives that they must not be present at any polling station or tally center without proper authorization.

High Court Judge Chimbizgani Kacheche has dismissed the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Transformation Movement (UTM), and five others’ bid to audit the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) system ahead of the General Election.

The judge also upheld MEC’s decision to utilize biometric technology in the forthcoming polls.

The case was brought forth by the DPP, UTM, and other parties who sought a judicial review of MEC’s decision to reject their proposal for an independent audit of the Election Management System (EMS).

They also challenged the use of electronic management devices for voter identification and electronic transmission of results.

MEC defended its hybrid approach, which combines biometric verification with a printed register and electronic transmission of results with manual backups.

This system, Attorney General Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda argued, ensures redundancy and multi-tier verification.

The AG described the DPP’s audit proposal as “overbroad, unscoped, and reckless,” warning it would amount to “sanctioned hacking” and compromise the system’s integrity.

Nyirenda emphasized that MEC has taken lawful transparency measures, including sharing the voters’ register, permitting inspections, and hosting stakeholder demonstratio.

The ruling means that MEC will proceed with its planned electoral process, using biometric technology for voter verification.

As the campaign trail is drawing closer to an end this coming Sunday, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Shadow Member of Parliament for South Lunzu Constituency Veronica Ndalama has defied the Political Parties Act of 2018 banning handouts during the campaign trail.

Section 41 (1) of the Political Parties Act provides that a candidate, political party or body or any person contesting or intending to contest in an election under this Act, shall not at any time issue a handout.

The Act further states that a person contravening the law will be liable to a fine of K10 million and a five-year jail term.

According to information at hand, Ndalama is moving around South Lunzu Constituency disbursing money to voters at night to woe them to vote for her on September 16, 2025.

Ndalama is also on record to have bought over 300 delegates during Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) primaries with money amounting to MK200, 000 each to vote for her.

As this is not enough, Ndalama is alleged to have sponsored the upcoming trip for a group of Machinjiri ladies trip with money amounting to Mk200,000.00 in exchange for votes.

When contacted for comment on the matter Registrar of Political Parties Kizito Tenthani said his office is yet to receive official complaint on the matter.

“My office is yet to receive an official complaint on the matter and we will act once we receive the official complaint. Let me also take this opportunity to tell all Malawians that as registrar of political parties we cannot be everywhere, we rely on people to inform us on the said malpractice,” said Tenthani.

Tenthani went further to say that his office will release a report on the number of complaint received regarding the handouts once the campaign trail is over.

“At the moment i can’t say how many cases that have been reported to my office as figures skyrocketing each passing day,” added Tenthani.

Effort to talk to Ndalama proved futile as her phone number went unanswered.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has suspended the election process for Msitu Ward in Mchinji South Constituency.

This decision follows the death of Edson Josiah, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate.

MEC Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja announced the suspension in line with section 49 of the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act, 2023.

She stated that all election proceedings in the ward are now void. A fresh election will be held as though a vacancy had occurred.

Justice Mtalimanja added that the Commission will announce a notice of vacancy at an appropriate time. A by-election will then be conducted in accordance with the law.

Independent Member of Parliament for South Lunzu Constituency Alex Achalume Chimwala is among 9 candidates that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has approved to contest in the constituency ahead of the September 16 polls.

Chimwala faced numerous challenges ahead of his parliamentary bid and one of it being thieves invading is car and going away with his nomination papers.

But this did not distract him from contesting for the Parliamentary seat in South Lunzu constituency and now his name is on the final list of candidates approved by MEC.

He also championed the renovation of Nanthoka Police Unit.

As this is not enough,Chimwala has been sponsoring football and netball leagues in Machinjiri area using his personal money.

Independent Shadow Member of Parliament for South Lunzu Constituency Alex Achalume Chimwala has finally presentation his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) ahead of September 16 polls with a promise to revitalize Machanjiri Township.

The development comes barely a day after failing to do the exercise on Monday July 28, 2025 after unknown thieves went away with his nomination papers.

Speaking to the press after presenting the nomination papers to the constituency tally centre mounted at South Lunzu Primary School Chimwala could not hide his excitement.

“Am happy that finally i have submitted the nomination papers to MEC. Yesterday i failed to do so because some unknown people from my rival camp broke into my car and went away with my papers with an aim of frustrating me but they have failed.

“The journey has started and i will campaign massively,” said Chimwala while attracting ululations from his party supporters who came out in large numbers.

Turning to the development agendas for the constituency, Chimwala promised a massive development projects in the constituency once elected on September 16.

“Machinjiri needs main market, Machinjiri needs a youth centre and Machinjiri needs a Secondary School and once am elected all these project will be at the centre stage. Its time for Machinjiri people to experience meaningful development and i assure you on that,” said Chimwala.

After presenting the nomination papers, Chimwala conducted a whistle stop tour across the township causing a traffic-jam.

Chimwala is currently the front-runners in the constituency.
