John McAslan + Partners’ most challenging recent pro bono project, in partnership with the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative in Malawi and Arup in the UK, supports the Malawi government’s scheme to develop free primary education for all children in well-designed buildings. The low-cost structures allow plenty of daylight and natural ventilation inside, use local materials such as soil blocks, and recover rainwater for irrigation. The end and central terraces encourage the community to use the buildings for adult learning and other activities.
