Malawi Posts Corporation staff strike demand 46% salary increment

Employees of the Malawi Posts Corporation(MPC) are on a nationwide strike demanding a 46 percent salary increment. The strike has left all the post offices closed across the country.

The industrial action is in protest of a 5 percent salary increment the institution gave the workers last month.

The workers have since accused the authorities of disregarding their financial welfare amid current economic challenges.

Some employees who spoke to capital Radio said the MPC Management on the 26th of this month communicated to them that the government had approved a 5 percent salary increment.

However, parliament approved 21 percent salary increment for all civil servants in the 2012-2013 National Budget.

This is the third time workers in important service are staging a strike.

Last week, Blantyre water board workers shut down water supply demanding a 30 percent salary increment.

Escom workers also went on strike, threatening to cut off power across the country. They were demanding a 40 percent salary increment.
