UNIMA FOUNDING VICE CHANCELLOR DIES

University of Malawi’s (UNIMA) first founding Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ian Michael has past away at the age of 99.

Dr. Michael is reported to have died about two weeks ago.

Born in 1915, Dr. Ian Michael was appointed the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi in 1964 but resigned in 1973.

In November 1973, Dr. Michael became the Deputy Director of the Institute of Education and resigned in1978.

Dr. Michael was also the founding member of the Textbook Colloquium (established in 1988), together with Christopher Stray which was established to promote the interdisciplinary study of textbooks, especially from a historical perspective.

As the chancellor, Dr. Michael helped set the foundation for what has become of the University of Malawi today, expanding it from one constituent college to five, namely: Bunda College of Agriculture, Chancellor College, Polytechnic, Soche Hill College and Institute of Public Administration (IPA).

Chancellor College merged with Soche and IPA and moved its campus from Blantyre to Zomba in 1973.

Dr. Michael’s cremation was scheduled to take place today.
