Classes suspended at MIJ Blantyre Campus over death of student

Information reaching faceofmalawi indicates that classes at Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) Blantyre have been suspended to allow students mourn a fellow student who die on Monday at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital after a short illness.

On Tuesday, the students went on rampage to protest against the decision by management to only send three students to attend the burial of the deceased identified as Natasha Phiri in her home district, Dowa.

The students wanted half of the school attend the burial ceremony which is scheduled to take place today, according to an eyewitness who rushed to the scene.

It took the intervention of armed police officers who fired teargass to disperse the angry students who were planning to vandalise school.

Due to this tension, Management has suspended the classes up to next week Monday.

“This is to notify all students that classes have been suspended with immediate effect. Therefore, no student is allowed to be found around the Campus or the Secretariat within this period.

“Classes will resume on Monday October 22, 2018. This is to observe the mourning period for the late Natacia Phiri who will be laid to rest on Wednesday 17th October 17, 2018 in Dowa District,” read in part the statement.

The management has since urged the students to be calm in the mourning period.

Phiri joined MIJ in January this year.
