In 2007, Niall Grant co-founded the ‘Tili Tonse’ organisation through his participation with the Hunter Leadership Program, which identifies and offers scholarships to potential future leaders for Scotland.

A second year Finance and Economics student at the University of Strathclyde, Grant, from Edinburgh, has developed the programme along with colleague Patricio Kulemeka, a native of Malawi, who runs the day to day operation of the project based in the southern city of Blantyre.

Through participation in football and training, ‘Tili Tonse’ offers health awareness and educational support to men and women aged between 16 and 25 years old.

The project works with a large section of the local community, utilising football to stimulate positive change in people’s lives. As Malawi is a country with an enormous rich-poor divide, there are barely any provisions for education or health, and HIV/AIDS is an enormous problem.

As part of its work ‘Tili Tonse’ teaches teams in Blantyre, some of which are coached and tutored by previous members of the Malawi Homeless World Cup team who share their knowledge and experience of the tournament.
