Chanco students threaten strike over tuition fee

A decision by Chancellor College to hike tuition fees has forced students at the college to threaten they will go on strike on Monday to protest over the decision.

President of the students’ union, Patrick Phiri told the media that they will challenge the decision to increase the fees from the current K 55,000 to the old K25,000.

“It has also been a trend that any increment on the tuition fees affects those in the first year,” said Phiri.

He said the students also want the immediate resumption of the disbursement of the students’ loan service that was previously handled by the Malawi Savings Bank (MSB).

The students’ body leader also hinted that failure to address the loan service could negatively affect them as the college insists on payment of the whole fees at the beginning of the semester.

“That’s one of the main reason we’re taking to the streets come Monday. We need government and university authorities to know our concerns,” he said.

There was no immediate comment from the college management as they were all in a meeting.

When the media visited the campus on Friday management members – headed by Principal Dr. Chris Kamlongera – were seen busy attending the to the situation.
