Carlsberg Cup final between Blue Eagles and Escom is set for December 8 depending on the national team’s performance in the ongoing Cecafa tournament in Uganda.
Carlsberg Cup final was rescheduled from this Saturday after Flames’ participation at Tusker Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup was confirmed.
Twikale Chirwa, senior brands manager for Carlsberg Malawi, sponsors of the K20 million cup, said they had come up with December 8 as a tentative date for the final considering that it would not be automatic that Flames could progress to the final set for December 8.
Malawi lost their group C opening match to Rwanda 2-0 and today they face Eritrea in a game which will determine their destiny.
“We have put 8 December as tentative date for the final because the finalists Blue Eagles and Escom have contributed bulk of players to the national team,” Chirwa said.
“If the Flames reach the final, which is something we are hoping for, we are flexible to change the date.”
Blue Eagles have contributed defender Steve Chagoma, midfielders, Patrick Masanjala and Micium Mhone and striker Innocent Bokosi while Escom’s Chiukepo Msowoya and Bernard Harawa had also made the trip.
Fam commercial manager Casper Jangale confirmed yesterday that Fam and Carlsberg Malawi Breweries met on Monday to come up with the day for the final.
“It’s true that we had a meeting with our sponsors over the possibility of having the game played next week subject to the national team’s performance,” Jangale said.
In another development, Carlsberg Malawi are impressed with the competition which has seen big teams; Big Bullets, Mighty Wanderers, Silver Strikers and Civo United booted out of the race before the quarterfinals.
“It has been full of surprises something which makes football very exciting,” Chirwa said.
“We are encouraged to see the development of small teams and also their contribution to the national team hence we are achieving our goal of football development in Malawi.”
