Chess Russian grandmaster Garry Kasparov unveils school project in Malawi

Kasparov has unveiled a plan to adopt 10 schools across the country which his foundation will support while building chess infrastructure.

The former long-time undisputed champion made the remarks in Lilongwe on Wednesday at a press briefing after meeting government officials.

“I am excited to be here and share my vision with the government of Malawi, we had a fruitful discussion. Everywhere I go I get warm reception; governments listen but today, there was also commitment of support from government which is very important,” said Kasparov who jetted into the country at around 12 noon via Kamuzu International Airport.

After a closed-door meeting with senior government officials, including the Sports and Education ministers Enock Chihana and Eunice Kazembe respectively, he separately met Chess Association of Malawi officials and chess players.

Kasparov is visiting several African countries and has so far visited Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda. – By Golden Matonga
