RIGGING SCARE IN LILONGWE

An angry mob has deflated tires of a car in Lilongwe on suspicion that it carried ballot papers cast in favour of President Joyce Banda ahead of the May 20 polls.

Information coming from the Capital city indicates that the car, registration number BP 523, which belongs to the Lilongwe City Police Patrol has had its tires deflated after people saw that it had ballot papers in the car. All cars that are working for the Malawi Electoral Commission in these elections have special registration numbers, TPE XXX.

However, the Police car had no such a registration which caused an uproar as to why it was carrying election materials.

Meanwhile, reports that FaceofMalawi has not independently verified indicate that the car carried boxes with ballot papers cast in favour of President Banda who has been accused of planning to rig the elections by the opposition.

Images of ballot boxes that had to be empty but have papers in them have since been circulating on social media as evidence that has been taken from the scene. The ballot boxes are six in total and they show that they have contents inside them which is unusual of ballot boxes before people have voted.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chair, Maxon Mbendera, has gone about assuring the nation of a free and fair election but the events in Lilongwe have thrown some doubt over his words.

MEC is yet to comment on the issue.
