MUTHARIKA IN CHINA FOR CHAMPIONS’ 2015 GLOBAL ECONOMIC FORUM

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on Sunday left the country for China to attend the annual meeting of the champions 2015 under the Global Economic Forum (GEF).

The forum which is expected to run from 9th -11th September, in China at Dalia International Conference Center (DICC) will call upon 2,000 delegates from across the world, amongst who are global scientists, technology pioneers, social entrepreneurs, intellectuals and political leaders.

Speaking in an interview upon departure at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, President Mutharika said the forum will provide an opportunity for Malawi to discuss emerging issues and problems facing the country.

Mutharika said, “Malawi is going to participate in a global debate, where we will highlight Malawi’s situation.”

The President further disclosed that he will among other things meet Chinese Prime Minister with whom he will discuss the second phase of China’s development projects in Malawi.

“As we all know, the construction of the New Stadium in Lilongwe is almost finished, now we are going to discuss on the second phase of China’s development activities,” he highlighted.

Mutharika further narrated that, he was also going to meet several companies to invest in Malawi.

This year the meeting is themed, “Charting a new course of growth,” it will bring together 90 countries from global growth companies from rapidly growing countries such as China, Brazil and Russia, Mexico and India and also growing companies from developing countries.

The annual meetings are held in China, alternating between two cities, thus Tianjin and Dalian which will host this year’s meetings.

The GEF was founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, a German business professor at the University of Switzerland; it was known as European Management Forum until 1974.

The forum also hosts regional meetings in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, its objective is to enhance productivity and achieve balanced growth to the world especially the developing countries.
