FATHER EDWARD MASAUKO LAID TO REST

Late Reverend Father Edward Masauko, a social commentator and Justice Activist has been laid to rest today at the Limbe Cathedral Cemetery in Blantyre.

Father Masauko, popular for coining the phrase “Sikono mkamwa” died on Friday last week at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre after a long illness.

Bishop Peter Musikuwa of Chikwawa Diocese, Archbishop Tarcizio Ziyaye of the Lilongwe Archdiocese and Bishop Montfort Sitima of Mangochi Diocese led thousands of mourners from all walks of life that came to witness the burial of a fearless Father Masauka.

In his eulogy, Reverend Father Philip Mbeta described Father Masauko as an intelligent and great teacher; courageous, powerful, fearless and eloquent preacher and a renowned Biblical scholar.

Mbeta said that this was a day to celebrate the life of Father Edward Masauko who was an accomplished priest.

“As a young boy Father Masauko accepted God’s call just like Isaiah did. He said “yes” to God to proclaim the Good News of salvation which we read in Luke 4:16-21, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to bring good tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord,” said Mbeta.

On his part, Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima described the late Father Masauko as fearless, courageous, saying he was the voice of the voiceless.

Apart from serving as a priest, Father Masauko also served as Board Chair of the Malawi Postal Corporation.
